Morning everyone. I am new member here and a proud new tacoma owner! I recently just bought a 2016 tacoma trd sport. The thing is a beast. I did a full inspection when I go the vehicle this past weekend but today I noticed on the back passenger rim the paint is starting to chip off (see picture). I feel like I would of caught it at the dealership, but not much I can do now...I also took it to get washed and waxed this week at this new DIY car wash where it has pressure washers for water/soap/wax etc. I am hoping that the water pressure did not chip some paint off as its made for washing cars specifically but who knows...

Does anyone know a way to prevent it from chipping more without having to repaint the entire rim or all 4 rims to match? Any protective coding I can put on now to prevent further chips or would it be wise to find a color match and repaint that area or entire rim? Its a dark grey rim color and I cannot seem to find it anywhere, wondering if maybe its aftermarket. Thoughts?

Brake dust is highly corrosive. It comes off the brakes and embeds into the finish of the wheel. Overtime it corrodes and will ruin the finish of the wheel.

The only solution is to sandblast the wheel and refinish it, and even then you still might get flaking and peeling.

It is really important to physically get down and wash your wheels with a good soap and wheel brushes, as well as use a spray on de-ironizer to neutrilize embedded brake dust and remove it.
Just hosing off or pressure washing your wheels doesn’t cut it.

I think its unusual that a ‘16 rim would tarnish that easily but the previous owner could have used a product on the wheel that harmed the finish (like a brake cleaner).

I would use this as an excuse to buy new wheels.

Looks like the paint on the wheel is flaking not chipping although there is a chip or two. Probably from the self service car wash. There is little you can do now but deal with it. Your options are to take it to a shop that specializes in wheel repair and have them repaint them, buy new wheels, or just accept it the way it is and expect more flaking.

I appreciate it thank you. The other 3 rims are in great condition, its just the one that is flaking. I'd like to just replace the one (and love the color of current rims), but color match may be hard. Eventually I will get new ones if that is the case. Any protective coating I can put on to prevent further flaking in the meantime?

I do not think it is plastidip as it does not have a matte finish and its flaking, not peeling off like plastidip. Or are you suggesting to plastidip it? - If so, I'd rather get it repainted and do it right.

You say you purchased a TRD Sport but those rims are from an SR5, not a Sport.

$$ Price range for getting them all repainted? Also can they color match to the existing color?

Get some CarPro Iron-X and do a decontamination wash, then use CarpPro Dlux wheel coating. Easy to apply for beginners. You won't ha e this problem anymore!

Previous owner bought someone’s off-road wheels, not stock Sport wheels. Not noticeable from standing height, run with it and upgrade down the road a few miles. When you need new tires, then get some new take offs at a great price!
