A 20” rim with a 33” tire will ride nearly identical to a stock Tacoma since it has the same contact patch and sidewalk height. You can even air it down exactly the same as a stock Tacoma. You obviously give up a lot of advantages compared to the same 33” tire on a 16” rim but when compared to stock it’s near identical.

I wouldn’t do it on a Tacoma but it’s not a performance killer for a normal daily driver.

I'm not entirely sure how you figure that you would have almost double the sidewall to an average car or crossover especially if we're considering "stock equivalent" sizing. A Corolla L has 195/65R15 wheels which have 5" of sidewall, similarly a 265/50R20 wheel would have a hair over at 5.25" of sidewall. From my own experience I never go for high trim packages on vehicles I buy.

If a stock tire is 265/70R16 on a TRD OR or 265/65R17 on a TRD Sport and you're going up to a 20" wheel with 33" tires on you may not get the same sidewall height, you may be getting less sidewall really. Depends entirely on actual tire sizing I guess, my 255/85R16 Coopers are "33s" but only 32.64" or something like that lol.

I would think even if you kept it "stock equivalent" you'd gain a form of performance, though a lack of comfort. "Better" handling depending on your perception. Read: the ability to feel the road.

Braking should be within the same length/time, weight might even be fairly similar depending on wheel and tire choice. Stock Tacoma TRD OR wheel and tire was about 65-70lb total I believe, find a nice light 20" wheel and you should weigh in to about the same.

@YotaGirl83 if you're having issues finding 20" wheels that fit Tacomas, Fuel Offroad carries a HEAP of styles in 20" with correct fitment for Tacomas; bore size n all. Some are pretty weighty, over 40lbs but some I was checking into sat around 30-35 for their 1pc wheel offerings so you've got some research to do. Find something that gives you a good weight balance, my unsprung weight is sitting around 90lbs and it's brutal!

Enjoy your search and enjoy your ride!

The OP didn’t mention a lift , so a 33” tire is unlikely to fit. A 265/50 on a 20 inch rim is very close to stock diameter .
Something like a Nitto Ridge Grappler might be an option. Premium tire, but any 20 inch option is going to be spendy.

How much extra for a lift and proper suspension and other upgrades that aren’t going to wear out drivetrain parts prematurely?

$0. You don’t need a lift to fit larger diameter tires. You could run 265/65/20 on stock suspension and be fine.

Nothing wrong with 20's on a truck. I have a friend with the Limited 20's on his new 4Runner which look great. Another friend has factory 20's on his Canyon; looks good and on decent roads it still rides better than my Tacoma on 17's. They're not doing any "real" off-roading, just some dirt/gravel trails and beaches.
BUT... my friend with the Canyon recently had a sidewall blowout from an especially nasty pothole, so that might be a consideration depending on where you live.

I think the people that worry about airing down their tires to do serious off-roading should probably get a vehicle that is actually made for off-roading and not made and marketed to middle class office people that hit a trail every other weekend lmfao. "Look guys I spent $10k+ doing a front SAS to be barely as capable as a jeep wrangler!"

“Look guys i butchered my cab mounts just to fit 35’s”

No where in the O.P.'s post do i see anything about offroading. She just asked about fitting
20" wheels.O.p, if you go to the custom offset website I believe there is a fitment guide, and I think there are some on the bigger tire and wheel websites as well.

Good to know thanks. How’s the ride with such a skinny sidewall?

It’s the same sidewall height as a stock Tacoma so it should be about the same ride quality.

Ya, that’s not even a little true. Not. Even. A little.

Good luck running 33+” tires on stock suspension.

You don’t know what you’re saying. 265/65/20 is at minimum 33.5” tall.
You’d be rubbing on any amount of turn if not just sitting in the wheel well straight on.

Yep, absolutely clueless, never put a different tire on the Tacoma in my life. It’s ok though, you can go on thinking that a lift will make a bigger tire fit in the same size hole.

What you need there is a baseball bat to roll the fenders out with. Do it on a hot sunny day to help keep the paint from cracking.
