Ring and pinion replacement?

    Sorry, not trying to be a dick, just frustrated about my truck and trying to get info. I was expecting information more along the lines of what needs to be done and why I possibly might or might not be able to do it. Just frustrates me when I get responses like "this is difficult" versus "here's what needs to be done".

    I do appreciate your help though

    you should post your location as you might get lucky and find somebody near you to help.
    pull your third and get an idea whats up. post up pics and we can figure it out.
    easist would be just a 3rd swap. i have seen some for sale used for 400 bucks in the sale adds.
    you can try swapping gears, but you will be spending some money on tools and time to set backlash and such.

    So I'm in northwest CT. If anyone is in CT and can get access to a third member I would be very interested in buying it.

    I got the third out and there are busted teeth on the ring gear.

    So just an update, the entire third member is apart except for the rear bearing on the pinion gear. Waiting on the bearing puller and the ring and pinion in the mail. Everything came apart fairly easily with regular tools, no specialty tools required so far besides the bearing puller. I already had everything I needed up to this point. I decided to go this route because every other option was just too expensive and I don't mind taking my time and learning about something as I go. I'm a stickler for the details so I think I'll be ok moving forward.

    Side note: that diff fluid stinks...

    I have access to a magnet base dial indicator, dial calipers, micrometer, and a bar type inch/lbs torque wrench. I have machinists and mechanics in my family who are more than happy to let me use their tools

    So the new ring and pinion came in the mail yesterday! And ECGS sent the wrong ones... wtf...

    I ordered the 4.10, they sent the 4.11. The order form even says TV6-410-NG. The ring and pinion I ended up with is TV6-411-29-NG. Closes enough, right? Not so much... What I need has 41 teeth on the ring gear and 10 teeth on the pinion gear (hence 4.10) however the set they sent has 37 teeth on the ring gear and 9 teeth on the pinion gear. That would probably be fine if this was a 2WD truck but it's not...

    I hate stuff like this....

    Why is the 4.10 OEM ring and pinion so hard to find? Am I not looking in the right places?

    Can someone reply to me and tell me if I'm wrong on this? I just talked with the guy at ECGS and he said "you absolutely 100% have the right gears." He said "4.09 and 4.10 and 4.11 are all the same." But I know math and 41 divided by 10 comes out to 4.1 and 37 divided by 9 comes out to 4.1111111..... so they aren't "100%" the same. But is it really ok to go with? It's a 4WD truck and I would assume the front is the same as the back so the front is most likely 4.10. So is it ok to go with 4.11 in the back? Will I have problems if I use 4WD?

    i dont think anybody makes it but OEM. and yes, being a number or two itsnt bad and is done a lot. i have seen oem 4.10 gears on sale here before too. sadly, i just threw some away also lol

    Ok thanks guys. I guess I freaked out a little prematurely. I just wish they were "exactly" the same so I wouldn't have to worry about anything but I guess I don't have to worry anyway.

    5100s/1.6in eibachs, wheelers AAL, OME N182 rear shocks, 4.56s, Detroit truetrac, 255/75/17, SOSConcepts sliders
    There is a certain percentage that front and back have to be within, but I can't find that info right now. There are many applications that use slightly different front and rear gears because of different model axles front and rear. 0.01 ratio is well under the limits, so don't worry.
