You have an open 8.4". It's kind of counter-intuitive, because the ring gear still measures 8", just like most other tacoma ring gears. Here's a link that explains it better- http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/#T100-Tundra

If you want to regear consider using ECGS, awesome customer service and good warranty- http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-788575-tacoma-8-4-non-eld-t100-tundra-3rd.html

thank you. I called Eaton and they only offer the torsen locker for 8.4". The rep said they don't have 8.4"s from after 2006

If you want to put in a locker - ARB air locker is the way to go.

I agree an air locker is 100% once engaged, but I like the simplicity and strength of the torsen.

Is there an actual torsen locker? I've never heard of one. Do you want limited slip or an actual locker?

I'm not sure that any of the torsen LSs are terribly simple either.

    Just saying...

the torsen is made by Eaton or Detroit. I think it's simple because there isn't any need for a compressor, special fluid or wiring and switches

All of our work trucks are silverados and they have those "auto lockers" i hate em, they dont engage till ur already spinning which could be to late, plus i think i read that they auto disengage at 20 mph. All those moving parts and them slammimg stuff into and the yanking it out while still moving seems sketchy to me, plus ive hit 70 in my truck with the locker on( was not going 70 just flinging mud that fast off my back tires BOTH BACK TIRES) my $.02

the torsen uses constant mesh worm gears. Nearly impossible to damage

Sorry, I wasn't paying attention. Torsen is a limited slip differential not a "locker."

    You've seen this animation, right?

    http://www.pinterest.com/pin/288582288594272168/

Anyhow, if a limited slip is what you want - a torsen geared implementation is the way to go.

uhhh there are selectable lockers and auto lockers and just because ONE of the torsens is worm drive doesn't mean you can't wear it out but okay, good luck

As opposed to clutch pack type limited slips, which gradually wear out and become no better than open differentials over time, the torsen design functions as a limited slip for the entire life of the differential.

Yes, anything mechanical may ultimately wear out and fail.
