I have an 04 and I noticed today there's a bit of very fine dust in the headlight bucket.

Most likely from gypsum lake bed & desert traveling.

Would it be fine if I removed the headlight poured distilled water in, shook it around, dumped it out, let it drip-dry then place it on a dry sponge to completely dry overnight?

Does anyone have any strong feelings against me doing this?

You can put the headlight housing in the oven, take the 2 clips off of each one holding the lenses to the back of the housing, and pry them apart and clean them that way.

Well I did this when I did my retro fit but it was split apart. But I also wiped it clean with a microfiber cloth. But you have no way of doing this the way you want to so you may end up with water spots. Only other thing I can think of is maybe use a hair blow dryer and dry it out right after rinsing to help prevent water spots. Or maybe compressed air and stick the line/hose inside the hole and give 'er a good blast off. And make sure it is COMPLETELY dry before reinstalling. Give it a shot!
