Just went and googled him since I had no idea who he was (his last letter was very inspiring). Sounds like he was a real Canadian patriot and well-respected man. RIP, Sir.

Every once in awhile a politician comes along who is in it to serve the people and NOT to line his own pockets and fuck people over. Too bad the majority of people don't recognize this until its too late. They say the only the good die young. RIP Jack.

I remember seeing him give his press conference when he stepped down... his appearance seemed to change overnight. I couldn't believe it. He was definitely in trouble.

What a brave and tough SOB. That election might have done him in, though. Wonder what the NDP is going to do now. That's a pretty big deal for them.

I honestly didn't think much of him until about the middle of the election campaign when I watched Peter Mansbridge interview him on the charter plane between campaign stops. That and also Rick Mercer interviewing Layton in his own home in Toronto. His family has quite the impressive setup (solar power, etc). AND... he spoke Cantonese as well.
He really seemed quite genuine and honest in those more intimate interviews.
