She was just diagnosed a burnt valve. Estimated $2k to fix. I don't have the cash and there are a lot of other issues that could add up soon. Someone offered me $500 for body parts. I'm thinking about telling him he can have the whole truck for $800.

    Would love anyones input!!

    Thanks :)

That is a good point. A friend suggested buying a used motor versus getting it fixed. I just don't know man! pulling my hair out over this

    Thanks for the input :)

Ditto. Keep the motor and rebuild it with your spare time and money add a turbo. In a year or two drop it in and sell the interim motor to someone else. My two cents. If you can swing it.

22 RE? Install it yourself. Grab all your mm wrenches and a cherry picker. If you have little to no mechanic skills it may take a weekend but you'll gain the knowledge and confidence to wrench on your truck more often. If you start wrenching your self you will save a shit ton of money in the years to come.

get a haynes manual, tear down the intake and exhaust to remove the head on your own. take the head to a machine shop for rebuilding. do everything according to the manual. it's moderately difficult, but if you do the labor, that 2k drops ~90%

the machine shop i work in rebuilds heads for around 200 bucks if not less. that's pressure/vacuum testing for any other damages, cleaning, cutting/grinding the seats and valves, and a resurface. plus a head set for 60 ish and you can then put everything back together according to the manual.

call a local engine machine shop and ask for a price!

besides, your truck is just going to sit there. why not have a learning experience?

My motor cost me $1200ish and took me around a week to put in, but I took a lot of really long breaks :p I'd say if it's still in good shape just get a used motor and put it in, the hardest part for me was getting the thing lined up and into the trans. And I'm just an 18 year old kid lol

to start, i was wrong about the price to refurbish a head. our shop does it for about 275. not 200. but you may be able to get it cheaper yet if all you really need is just a resurface and 1 or 2 valves to be seated.

but im thinking you may not have a burnt valve. do a compression test on your truck. and see what each cylinder caps out at. i think they should cap out somewhere around the 170s. a burn valve will maybe hit 40psi. MAYBE.

Other than the burnt valve, if it's still running well, I'd save it. New (used) motor and you have a reliable truck - much cheaper than trying to replace it.

as others have mentioned, do a compression test on it and see what the results are. the garage may just be telling you something to make money off of you. there are lots of shops that tell you you need engine work just because it needs a tune up, pretty common practice to gouge people

if its a 4 cylinder idling rough, everyone ever made does that and its normal.

which engine do you have I4 or v6?

what was the reason you brought it in to get checked in the first place?
