I put sound deadening mat on my back wall and it makes a huge difference.

I took my truck in to toyota and had the mechanic ride with me and he agreed that it was loud. They put some insulation and it helped a little. I think it needs more but I guess I will have to do it to make it right. Toyota is trying to make it right but for a $41000 truck it should have been quiet from the factory.

I had / have the same issue and have do lots to reduce the road noise, took it to Toyota and they said, "what noise". Mine too sounds like the rear access cab door is partially open. I pulled the real bulkhead panel, had to remove the rear flip down seats to pull the wall. I dynomat'd the entire back wall and caulked around the vents and as above put a small bead on each of the rubber vent flaps. That helped a bit. Next I put a long piece of foam rubber pipe wrap across the bottom and top of the bed between the bed and the cab body. Again, a bit of improvement. Then I pulled out the rear storage compartment behind the seats, dynomat'd the floor area very well and then, get this, sprayed foam insulation in the corners closest to the doors where there is a huge void on either side of each lower door area. Let that dry for two days with the windows partially open. The last effort made a huge improvement. It's still noisier that it should be but much improved. And you cant seal off the rear bulkhead vents all together without having serious issues with airbag deployment and overall cab circulation. No question Toyota sucks when it comes to Tacoma cab noise management compared to GM/Chevy. Next spring I'll pull the access cab door trims and insulate inside the doors.

Thanks for the information sure with you would ave taken or posted pics of all of your work for us. It's definitely a problem and your local dealer most likely won't attempt to fix it. The will just tell you they can't hear anything or it's a truck, deal with it!
I would love to add insulation and/or sound deadening material but I really don't want to tear out my seats and carpet. Wonder if placing more insulation behind the rear seats along with dynamat would help? I would like to get access to a decibel meter and gauge what the sound difference is so you can see how many decibels you have dropped after your work.

I personally don't think you need to remove the seats and carpet although I have heard a couple guys pulled their head liners and insulated up there. For me the majority of the noise is isolated to the rear bulkhead and access door areas. In the spring, it's full blown winter here, I plan on removing the access door interior panels and dynomating and insulating as my last attempt to eliminate road noise. Best of luck all. It certainly is a big issue with the Taco and as a first time owner (have had lots of access cabs from other OEM's) I'm really disappointed. And yes, I know it's a truck but it's loud as hell inside at highway speed.

The rear diff howl is super faint, but anyone with an ear for that kind of stuff will pick it up - I've learned to live with it.

This noise was in my 2nd Gen as well. I used some dynamat and mass loaded vinyl sound proofing material and put it on the back wall of the truck. I also dynamatted the rear doors and floor area underneath the rear seats. It made a pretty big difference. I personally wouldn't touch the vents. The soundproofing in conjunction with using the recirculate button should reduce the noise substantially.

I completely covered the rear panel wall with mass loaded vinyl. Day and night difference, completely eliminated the wind rush sound from the rear of the cab. Unfortunately it makes the coarse engine tone more noticeable. It did reduce the exhaust tone at idle and low speeds which is what I was looking for.

Same problem here so I pulled everything out off the back wall area. I'm going to sound deaden everything including under the carpet. I've already done the insides of back doors but after reading this thread I'm going to leave the vents to the outside open. I sure don't want to create problems with air bag deploy.
I have a 2016 4Runner Limited that is as quiet as a church mouse. That's what I'm looking for.

I put sound deadening on back wall and on floor of rear seats. Take seats out, peal back carpet and apply. Fixed the issue for me

The vents on the cab rear bulkhead are for emergency venting upon airbag deployment. Should you seal these up you may be bleeding from your ears if the air bags deploy.
