My truck is very capable. I'm sure it can do a lot more than I do with it. But, I have a lot more risk mitigation with my truck that's worth what, 33k? vs my old jeep worth 2k. THAT thing was amazingly capable. Not nearly as capable as my friends dodge dakota that didn't pass inspection and was worth scrap only. Now that thing.... When you know your truck might be worth nothing but scrap in the near future, why bother keeping it running? That was a fun day in the woods.

someone paid him 500 for it for a woods truck since it was still running when we left the woods

5 years ago, I would of agreed with you, until I was going down a forest road, nice enough you could pull a 30’ trailer down it. My GX470 was running SL tires, a rock ripped the through the belt, no puncture that could be seen in the rubber. The tire was not repairable, but lucky I had some better tires on order

Every now and again I take a look at this thread and still wonder if its something I want to do. And every time the answer is yes it is. 7 months in the future will be August 2021 the time that I planned on going. By the end of March I will post up my dates for going which will depend on my vacation dates at work. I'm hoping someone will also want to join. Most likely last weeks of August and a week or 2 in September. Hoping on no more outbreaks that will force lock-downs and border closures, but waiting patiently to see what happens...

I'm probably out this year, but maybe next year! I have a plan right now from Providence to LA and back, the current plan is 6800 miles, 111 hours, I am planning it in 13 days, and to be fair one of those is basically zero movement (staying in Amarillo for a day). (A mix of border crossings and timing is why I am doing this road trip instead of the Tuktoyaktuk trip this year).

The “Milepost” can be your friend for Alcan part, not sure if it goes to Tuk yet.

I have plans to go back up in 2022 when some friends retire

I think it is safe to say that August is so far away in our Covid world that it is impossible to know now what will be available then. I hope for your sake this is a go. It would be a real shit deal to be mid way to the Yukon to find out they shut down non essential border crossing. Other than the last lake we discussed there must be other good destinations in Ontario worth exploring if we needed them!!

Agree, I would say that there could be the option of drive thru the prairies and Alberta, bc. I think that's more than feasible. Travel Restrictions on those parts tend to be less common

Over the past months I've been watching all the videos on U tube I can find, to get information and visual perception on what this trip would be like and what rally important things are front and center. Yes I've also taken all advise posted in this thread as a learning tool also. There are 2 videos that seem to fill both information and perception on the drive, actually there are many but I like these 2 the best. I sure most have seen them b4 but this morning was my first view and its worth posting I thought.....

This guy is informative and does a good job.

Temperature wise it is hit or miss up there, I woke up to frozen water jugs both mornings on the north canol, not fully frozen but 1.5-2 inches of ice on July 30th & 31st While hiking up beyond Tombstone we traversed a bit of snow that had yet to melt on August 4th. You will want a -5 sleeping bag at the very least up there in August. I ran my old Coleman catalytic heater those nights before going to sleep to warm up the back of the truck.

Yeah it’s going to be awhile before communities in the Yukon and the north are open to travellers. You guys have probably seen the Yukon Govt page.
I should add I’d like to head North with my Dad, he worked on the tugs on the McKenzie river and the Coast Guard up there in the 60s.
Be cool for him to go back.

Who does not need to self-isolate when they arrive in Yukon?
Everyone entering Yukon must self-isolate for 14 days, except:

    • for critical workers who have only left Yukon to perform their duties; or
    • residents of the Yukon BC border areas of Atlin, Lower Post, Fire Side, Jade City, Fraser and Pleasant Camp if they have not travelled outside of the BC border areas or Yukon in the last 14 days.

In July of 2018 it was so warm that I only put a jacket on once or twice and slept with bag open every night when up on the Dempster Highway, I am the guy who gets cold first.

Yeah I'll probably have a second +32 freedom degrees bag if I have the space.

Gotta be prepared for everything. It was 70's during the day and still 40s at night down by Tombstone and Eagle Plains. Once we hit the NWT border there was snow on the ground. Inuveik had snow on the ground and got cold at night (high 20s) and only into the 40s during the day. Tuk was only right at freezing but had good 30mph winds which made it cold. Way back down the snow had melted and it was ~50 at the NWT border. You just never know so just be prepared for it all

    This was mid July
