So I'm trying to convince the wife to drive to Seattle for Christmas Break. Maybe creep into Vancouver if we are up for it. We will have the better portion of the December 19-January 2nd (Spending Xmas eve and Xmas in Seattle) to make the loop and we will be taking the dog.

My initial plan would be to take it in stages up the 5 and back down the coast (try to surf) and alternate between camping, hotels, and friends' houses. I have friends in Portland, Brookings, Lincoln City, and Seattle.

I'm going to need to start investing in equipment soon. I've been looking at a truck tent to compliment the Short bed (like this one, thanks Reef) even though the mrs. is now afraid that she will surely freeze to death,

but any other insights, routes, or things to do would be totally welcome.

Was thinking on taking a road trip up there. Snow chains required or is it a not too early to worry about that?

I recommend to take the 1 North as far as you can. Some of the most beautiful road/scenery I have ever seen.

Must be nice, but you can't drive as fast I'm guessing. Am I right? However it must be worth it.

Yea it is a slow drive and takes forever, but is worth it. My dad and I took the coast from SLO to as far as we could (on our way from L.A. to Washington), and it took us 2 days just to get to where the 1 met back up with the 101 (which was before Humbolt).
