    Snacks, 2-4 gallons of water.

Remember, less is more. I wouldn't invest more than $50 in a small tent.

Did a 3000 mile road trip to Indiana from SoCal around this time last year . Slept inside the softopper. This is very useful to us .

High elevation and driving the mountain passes in CO is a whole different ball game. I-70 through CO is pretty and the most direct, but take some of the smaller highways/back routes if you have the time.

I'm in Aspen. Hit me up if you'd like a tune on your truck (drives WAY better), I can share a few trail/sightseeing recommendations, and maybe I'll even buy you a beer (if you're coming from AL, one IPA ought to be enough to get you drunk ).

Two hour stops are crucial. Wife and I did SC to Vegas and Back.
    Two hour stops. Trust me.

Most if not all national parks and popular spots like Hanging Lake need reservations through reservation.gov

Be sure to plan ahead and have things booked before you get here. Still lots of things to do on the fly but make sure you’re covered for the places you really want to visit.

Also another vote for the SW corner of Colorado. The Great Sand Dunes national park is another gem with some sandy 4x4 action on Medano Pass

i will definitely double check any potential detours we may choose before going, i didn’t even know about this because there isn’t much on the Gulf Coast. Really appreciate the heads up!

also definitely wanna find some trails and what not to play with the 4x4 more than the standard beach trip down here so i’ll keep the sand dunes in mind! Thanks again!

Be aware that you can't take your Taco (or any vehicle) out on the dunes. It's a national park, and traffic is restricted to established roads. There's a 4WD road that skirts the east side of the dunes in the park, then goes into the National forest and up over Medano Pass. It is definitely a sandy track going through the park though. You used to be able to take the low road or the high road. the low road actually went up Medano Creek in the park where it ran down across the sand until it disappeared.

Your road trip plans remind me of a journey I took a few years ago with my girlfriend. It was a trip that made me fall even more in love with her :) Enjoy every moment of your trip, trust me.

A good rule of thumb when using google maps is to add 30 minutes for every 3 hours of driving time displayed. The google machine does not need to stop or factor in gas, restroom breaks, or coffee. So, if google says 9 hours drive time, the adjusted and more accurate time will be 10.5 hours driving. The 30 for every 3 has worked well for me.

OP hasn’t been seen or heard of since October 2022, maybe he decided it was one way trip.
