Roadside assistance jacked my truck up by this instead of frame. What is this part?

there's no chance in hell the factory bottle jack could even reach the frame, let alone get the tires in the air. He jacked it up correctly off the lower ball joint, which is what the factory instructions say.

Not sure how this could have effected your skid plates, unless you're referring to the brake dust shields?

i think what he meant was jacking from the specified locations is impossible with the bottle jack. It just doesn't go high enough. I could be wrong though..

I wasn't even able to do it with my smaller floor jack without hitting the front bumper. Even that didn't go high enough

Those lower control arms are very strong, I've seen Tacoma fly through the whoops and bounce off the ground all with stock springs. Jacking it up did not damage anything.

Yeah, that's a lot of potential energy for a thin piece of sheet metal (skid plate) to store up. The jack would poke a whole through the skid plate before you got anywhere close storing up enough potential energy to even come close to shearing one of the bolts off, let alone all of them.

Most oils change shops don't bother taking the skids off to change the oil if it can at all be avoided. Too much time involved. They don't really care if they spill oil all over the skid.

Something is definitely wrong, but IMO it's pretty clear the jacking incident and the skid plate are more than likely unrelated.

When offroading, a lot of people do, yes.

Those supplied bottle jacks are pretty much a joke if you have 31" (stock size) or bigger tires, and are on uneven ground. The bottle jack will reach the cross member (not the frame as was mentioned in previous posts), but barely.

But if you use then on the LCAs they do a pretty good job.

Pretty sure a professional mechanic wouldn't use that bottle jack, either. That'd be dumb. If the roadside guy asks to use your bottle jack, that's a good sign you need a new roadside guy. Better off doing it yourself.

The bottle jacks are meant to be used ONLY in emergencies, and are far from ideal in any situation.

lifting the wheel up from the a-arm is fine, all that weight is supported in the a-arm anyways. It's a large piece of pressed steel. It's probably not recommended because it's not a 'flat' surface and as you lift the weight distribution actually changes slightly which in theory is very dangerous. No owners manual would recommend it

The oem jack goes under the engine there's a big nipple coming down off the frame. The rear goes to the leaf springs u bolt flange

The cross member, yeah. I was replying to a post about jacking on the frame behind the front wheels. I guess it's conceivable that there's enough reach from the oem bottle jack to reach the trany crossmember, but that would extend the bottle jack a lot. There just happen to be better places to jack from, like the LCA or the engine cross member...

The other advantage to jacking from the LCA is that you really only have to jack it up maybe an inch, whereas anywhere on the frame is several inches because you have to unload the suspension first.
