I checked the temperature of both drums. It didn't seem that one was hotter than the other.

We are at a state park 10 miles east of Park city. I'm going to try to find a local shop in the morning to see about getting a diagnosis, hoping to save a trip over the mountains to the dealer. Not sure if I should be driving this thing.

Just updated my post (#11) previously. Forgot to add the link for the redneck stethoscope method in case you decide to try. Be careful when under there while vehicle is unsupported by jack stands!

That is the smart move. I've found the shops and the Toyota dealer were extremely helpful when they know you are traveling.

    not enough.
My initial guess would be bearing (as it was said before). They take some time to fix. I would take it to Larry H. Miller and have it looked at. Unfortunately through that mountain pass. Try giving Karl Malone a call. They are a network of dealers and they might be able to help. There is a Karl Malone Toyota on the other side but also a Karl Malone Jeep Dodge Ram dealership in Heber City. Easier drive than going through the canyon pass. I'm actually taking my tacoma in tomorrow for service so I can't be of much help. Sorry OP. Best of luck!

Thanks to everyone for the assistance. Overnight I thought about a defective tire, going to swap on the spare and see if that helps. I'm hoping for a simple solution.
Would a bad bearing be silent when the wheel is spinning freely in the air?

Well, in hoping for a simple solution I got one. Went to take off the left rear wheel and most of the lugs were loose. Yes, I'm a bonehead, but I wouldn't expect that from a truck with 1800 miles. I know for a fact that there could've been an epic failure while driving and or pulling our trailer. I'm grateful that a crisis was averted and grateful for all the help from those on this forum. Thanks again!

So the dealer didn't PDI your truck? Wonder why lugs were loose

Have you run your VIN for the Rear Diff Recall? Have you inspected your Rear Diff for leaks. Watch the dealer hold your truck now....:laughing:

Yes, loose lug nuts will give you a high pitch squeak on a revolution. If you turn the car to one side or the other (effectively pulling and pushing the wheel on the posts) the squeak will stop in one direction.

You will probably break all your posts and lose your wheel if you don't tighten them up soon.

I just read this thread from beginning to end. I was pretty worried. I'm really glad it all worked out. Thank's for posting the root cause. I will be making a mental note.

They have to do a pdi (remove all of the plastic and such) and they wont check that all of the lugs are torqued to spec, they might at most install wheel locks
