Potts mountain has a few challenging sections that have no bypasses.

That would be awesome, so much farm land...theres got to be some good ones.

I was searching through jeep forums and found A BUNCH.

"There are several, Broad Run, Pott's Mountain, Bobblett's Gap, Bald Mountain/Fenwick Mines, Poor Mountain, Elliot's Creek, Shoe Creek, and another near Pandapa's Pond I think? Of course none of these are "in" Roanoke, but a simple 30-60 minute ride will cure that."

"bobblets gap rd: Takes you over the mountain under the parkway into Buchanan"
Directions (per the forum) - "Alright so when you get to Montvale turn left after the library onto goose creek valley rd. After you go under RR tracks goose creek goes right. You need to stay straight on pile rd. follow it a miles. Make sure you're paying attention because there's a spot where it look like it goes straight but pile rd actually bears left. Just stay on pike rd. you should see an electrical box with a green and white skull on it. You're getting close. Still a couple more miles to go but pay attention because bobblets gap is on the left in a right turn. Get on bobblets and follow it for maybe 2 miles. You'll get to a fork in the road, there should be a sign pointing right for lost trail rd, stay left. Kinda goes up ad to the left. After that you'll come to a driveway with a couple junk cars it's to the left just before. That's the trail. Enjoy."

I might give that one a shot sometime in the future.

Glad you gave the heads-up before I found myself with a FOBAR situation.

Bobbetts gap is about 15 min from me, it's fun, short trip. I went in the snow, it closes a few times a year depending on season.

Shoe creek has been closed for s couple years now.

Poor Mountain is also another place to go check out. Most all the decent 4wheel areas have been blocked around here years ago. I've not seen anything local that would require more than a Subaru.

I'm from WV and do most of my off road stuff up there. Nothing terribly advanced, but a lot of fun. And things are much more interesting on the back roads since all that rain hit.

You'd be better off going to a place like Uwharrie national forest in NC, great trails for all levels really. Make it a weekend. About 3 hours from Roanoke.

I ran Flagpole Knob a few weeks ago, and Mountain Lake just last weekend, on the beginning and end of my two week work trip to Savannah, GA. The former is close to the north end of George Washington National Forest, off 33 west of Harrisonburg, and the latter is near the south end of the forest. Not sure if it's actually Jefferson National Forest. Mountain Lake was 2WD for me all the way, but I did see a big ol lifted Suburban from the 90s struggling in the deep muddy puddles in 4WD. Found a decent campsite too.

Flagpole Knob was a pretty cool trail, though it's really easy to get confused and wind up on the wrong trail. I went off course and ended up on a 4WD required road and had plenty of rocky obstacles but ended up at the main meadow all the same. I think Flagpole Knob is about 3 hours from Roanoke.

Just found you guys today. I'm in the North Western corner of Bedford county and work in Forest off Rt460. Traded in my '05 4buggy for a 2016 TRD OR quicksand last week. I have yet to bring myself to even put it down a gravel road but it's time will come. There is a short, 3-4 mile at the most, trail right around the corner from my place that I've been dying to finish after it dented my running board last time I tried.

Hey Roanoke folks, anyone interested in trading your 16" wheels for my 17's? I have stock TRD wheels on my 2011. They have some OK tires the dealership put on there before I bought it this past December. They have good tread and do fairly well in snow and mud. I just want to get 16's because the tires are often a little cheaper and I want a little extra sidewall for when I air down. I can post or PM pics if anyone is interested. Cash can go either way, depending on what condition the wheels and tires are in. I need a set with tires though. Their condition isn't terribly important. If they're good enough to get me a couple weeks' use and a trip to the tire shop, I'd be interested.
