If it's really bad, fluid ain't gonna fix it...at least not for long.

I had a bearing or two go in mine a few years back...ended up having to replace the entire center section. It wasn't the funnest job, but it's been quiet ever since.

If the bearings went, no point in delaying the inevitable. Order a replacement 3rd member from ECGS and send yours back as core.

That's exactly how I fixed mine...couldn't have been any easier, and the one they sent me was dead silent.

Try putting the rear end on jack stands. Have a friend turn the rear wheels by hand, while you were checking and listening for where the noise is coming from. Or take it to a shop you trust and have them verify the problem.
I had just under 300,000 miles on mine before I had to replace my rear diff. About 335,000 miles I had the rear right side axle bearing and seal go.

Cheaper fix than using Lucas oil is just to the radio volume up. You’ll get the same result as using Lucas Oil and for a lot less money.

Thanks Poolguy. That sounds good to me..We had it in the air last night but I was running the engine...Plus 10 other folks drinking my beer..All i got done was change the gear oil for no reason...The old fluid looked like honey...

Are the U joints greasable? If so when you last grease them?

PreRunner didn't have greaseable U-joints, if I remember correctly.

Yes, the driveshaft carrier bearing and wheel bearings can go bad (and more likely than diff bearings). However, @MyMule's OP said he checked it with a stethoscope already. :notsure:

Lol you'd put the probe on the round part of the yoke... In any case it isn't hard to rule out: Unbolt the driveshaft from the pinion flange, spin the wheels. If the noise is still there, the noise can't come from any driveshaft component.
