Ouch, yeah they take advantage where they can. And they know that it’s not an average joe homeowner job. Shit I can probably retire offering to do these for half the dealer cost but I’d still feel bad knowing I raked someone over the coals.

Well mine have lasted 14 years. And if you can do them for $600 a piece. That’s about $43 a year.
Or $3.60 a month. When you think about it that way, that’s not too bad of a price. And I’d probably pay someone that if I knew it was getting good quality parts and they knew what they were doing.

    My biggest issue are
    1. I’ve never pressed a bearing on an axle shaft. And I get nervous cutting them off.
    2. I don’t have the tools
    3. And I’m stuck if something goes wrong.

I’m just not wanting to spend $1300 per side.
I feel comfortable doing the whole assembly.
I mean after all, I’ve basically done it already when doing the axle seal.
So, I’m a bit more confident in myself there.

I’d gladly do them for that price. But yes would take me a full day so I’d probably need your axle shafts or whole vehicle for the day. Sticker shock price is there but considering how often you need to do it, not really so bad in the grand scheme of things.

Are yours starting to go out or you just replacing them as preventative maintenance?

WOW guys!! Thanks for all the feedback. My mechanic is a small shop guy and may not have all the right equipment to easily replace bearings. He said he could do it but it would be about an 8 hr job versus about 4 hours to remove and replace the axle. I don't have the skills or tools to do either so I will have to pay someone to do the work. I am still leaning toward replacing the whole axle assembly if I can find one for a decent price.

Remember, it's quite possible to buy a high mileage rear axle assembly that has bearings that are ready to throw in the towel too. Be careful with this option.

My axle seal leaked about 75k miles ago.
I am hearing a noise from the left rear.
I’m lucky I have made it that far, typically the bearing fails shortly after the seal leaks.

My advice is replace the rear diff breather when doing the bearing. Or at a minimum check it.

I had a local shop quote the job.
It’s a bit cheaper than Toyota
But not cheaper than a loaded axle.
You can subtract $320 if not doing rear brakes.
