I have ordered many Ruffstuff housing for our shop builds and have been impressed with every one. They are a great company that does amazing work. Give them a call they will help you set it up.

Sorry to bring up an old thread. I got quoted the same width for a custom axle for the front. But just wondering what would be a good match for the rear end. Is there any other options then a custom? I was looking into maybe a tundra, t100, even 14b rear. Just wondering what others are using. Thanks guys.

Everyone will have their own opinion on axle. For me, I would say it really depend on what front axle you plan on running. Lets just say it won't be ideal to run a kp60 and T8 rear. Most will try to match the front to the rear axle, kp60&14b, d44&T8orT8.4, T9.5&T9.5, Thp8&T9.5 etc.

Also, I would try to match or keep close the rear wms to the front. Don't go 68wms front and have a 60.75wms rear and run a 3" wheel spacer on each wheel for a +6" width to total 66.75". You can run a 66.75 t100 if that's the case with a 8.4

To name a few toyota rear wms
    T100 66.75wms
    FJ cruiser ~64wms
    FF80 63wms

I’m still doing a lot of reading and research. But front range off road recommended a 8” high pinion with Toyota outers. 68” wms.

If you're running hp8 68wms, I'll do t100 axle for near matching width and strength of the 8.4

It'll take 8-12 week before you receive the built from diamond, not 5 to 6 month as previously mention.

You didn't mention what tire size your looking to go with. That plays a role in some of these decisions. 35-37s your pretty safe with a Toy HP/8"/Tundra/T100"8.4" with a stock 2.4/2.7/3.4 motor.

A little bit more strength would be a set of Cruiser 9.5s.

A modified motor running 37+ should be looking more of a custom axles and 9.5s or easier a set of 1 ton axles.

*I went the route with 68" wms F&R Diamonds...still in progress of swapping over tho :anonymous: A full float rear wouldnt be a bad thing either.

Playing it safe is better. But I know a couple folks with hp8/8, hp8/9.5, d44/8.4 on 40s and is still going. Just have to watch what you do tho. You will most likely go bigger. Bigger is better, that's what she said, lol.

It all depends on the weight of the rig too. Plenty of Jeeps out there are running 35s and 37s on their dana 30 fronts and keeping them alive

    True @Wulf

But with our Tacoma, I wouldn't worry too much about weight. Now if you have a v8 swap with massive torque, that's something else.

I would just get either an fj80 axle or a 14bolt depending on tire size. I would stay far away from a d44 as the stock taco axle is stronger and you may as well upgrade. ***TW AUTOLOCKER TRIGGER WARNING*** look for an open diff fj80 full float axle, and stick a spartan auto locker in there and save yourself about 1k over an elocker ***TW AUTOLOCKER TRIGGER WARNING OVER***

Wulf needs to go get his head checked for mentioning the d30 and d35.

I liked my elocker in my taco, it worked 100% of the time, I dont understand the hate for it. BUUUUTTT not worth it for an fj80 axle swap.

My experience has been the opposite, the e locker has worked 1-2x and is now stuck in the locked position unless I pull the motor off and unlock it. Not ruling out user error :D

Sure, but after going to all the effort to swap from the 8.4 with a welded diff I feel like it's a step backwards but you know there's more to that than the third :D :bananadead:
