I recently came across this rock chip on the front edge of my roof. Normally I’d use a paint/clear touch up pen to fill it in, but this one looks quite bad.

I’m thinking the tentacle-looking lines propagating away from the hole beneath the paint must be rust, no?

Can this be spot repaired? Will they need to remove the windshield? I don’t really care how the mismatched paint from a proper repair will look, I just want to stop the rust.

Can’t take it to the dealer and cry about a paint defect, it is obviously a rock chip as evidenced by the tiny bites out of the windshield glass just below it. Going to get a quote tomorrow from a good body shop.

Help me tacomaworld, what would you do?

Need to get that fixed soon. Air is lifting the paint and spreading the corrosion.

I’ve had 7 chips on my windshield and and drove through a sand storm in the desert and hasn’t cracked yet. I would be on my 3rd windshield then.

Tuned in here too. Have a chip by my headlight that needs fixing. Are touchup pens sometimes enough? No etching primer, etc?

Touch up paint is for chips/scratches that did not make it through the primer. If it's down to metal it needs a proper repair.

A touchup pen will not fix the issue the OP has. He has visible corrosion and has evidence of filiform corrosion. The rust needs to be removed, primed, and painted.

    that is an excellent article.
OP: as other said, down to the metal prime and paint. stop the progression of the filaments asap. you will probably have to get under the glass rubber, unfortunately.
i'm thinking unsightly. may need a pro.

Unfortunate; but I’d get it fixed properly.

yes, you can go claim/cry it’s a paint defect,,,,, and they can in turn, tell you to go shit, slip, n fall. If you intend to use this dealer for possible future warranty work, I'd not burn that bridge.

Not a great spot. Going to require the removal of the windshield to fix the covered area below the gasket.

Quoted $1300 which entails windshield removal, repair the spot/ blend the paint, then re-clear coat entire roof panel. Says the only way to guarantee the clear coat is do the whole roof over. Gonna hit it with converter and rust oleum for now and address it later can’t have my truck down for a whole week
