Once you get things running, reset learning values on tranny.

Also, on used ecu, check if you have a latest calibration ID.

Should my scanner have a calibration ID or how do I get it?

I don't really know if this scanner can do much with the transmission, sounded like the $3K version of the scanner did more with the tranny, do you think I can get it out of limp mode without that, or just drive and let it "learn" over driving it some?

Usually the info available in a health report or Mode $9.
Yoy need to fix the root cause of those codes. Otherwise you will stuck in the limb mode every time the code pops up.
Look through the menu for functions to test solenoids.

    Yeah.
You can read the calibration ID (version of the firmware/software), but you may have to go to the dealer to flash the most current. If you complain about shifting, maybe they will do it for free?

But your codes sound like a wiring problem to me. You are so close to having this figured out. There's gotta be some connector somewhere that insn't connected or not connected right.

We've gone through the connectors and wiring over and over. The only thing we found was the other connector which wasn't seated right, which cured the transmission heat warning.

It seems like it has to be something about the E9 connector, trying to find a picture of which one that is to send to our mechanic.

I still don't know what caused the ECU to complain in the first place, the engine runs fine, except idles high and is in limp mode. I plan to replace the crank sensor at the same time as the ECU and verify the connectors on the ECU again. Maybe the wrong cam sensors causes a short in the ECU output circuitry around E9 connector? Otherwise I don't know what else to do.

I hope this scanner can read the solenoid values, will find out in a couple days when it gets here. Our local dealer isn't terrible helpful, they've already determined they weren't going to do anything about the problem they caused, which is the reason for this thread.

@caribe makaira is the forum electrical wizard, perhaps he can provide a picture/diagram of the connector.

Digging in the manual around page 3500. I also can't believe there's more than 3500 pages in ANY manual. :) Space shuttle maybe.

New ECM showed up, don't see any bent pins, trying to figure out which one is E9.

Book says the exact trigger event is stored in memory, at least I think. I wonder if that will give me a clue what it thinks is wrong. If so, I should probably plug my scanner into the original ECM and try to get all the information I can before swapping.

You really ought to change the thread title at this point, and work the dealership name into it.
    Best of luck again, brother

This has been impressive to follow. I expect to see an “all clear truck is running great” post someday soon. You’ve got this.

double check ground point. E9 is being grounded on the engine. SM specifies 2 points: ED and EE via ECU pin 3

re-checked all the grounds, E9 looks like it's plugged in fine to the ECU, and seems to be correctly seated on the transmission, I kind of don't know where else to look, or what caused the limp mode.

original ECU, going to try to clear codes on this unit first and see what we can see, then have a replacement ECU if needed. I want to understand what happened before we go "fixing" it :)
