Rod knocking after pulling trailer up steep hill

Other bank or other connector? Bank 1 has 2, 4, 6 or is that bank 2?

found loose connector on other bank, now codes cleared and running better

Still have brake failure error on dash, just says check brake system, but no codes

Is that a function of driving around and hoping it learns? Brakes don't seem to have power brake boost, but they do work.

Note months of dust settled on dash cluster...

 

ABS fuse or something? Likely something simple at this point.

 

Dunno, looks like we have a leak in the radiator, got bumped I guess. Replacement coming in today or tomorrow, then I think I'll drive it down and fill up with gas from this year and see if it just fixes itself. Also, will look for blown fuse.

 

You have the vacuum booster; with it feeling like there is no brake boost, I would suspect you have a problem with the vacuum pump. You are using the vacuum pump that came on the used engine, and not your old vacuum pump, correct? The vacuum pump is the only thing that should affect brake boost on your model, so that's where I would focus. If you had the electronically operated hydraulic booster, that one builds all it's power from the wiring going to it. But that is only on TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro.

As for the brake warning, that could be a fuse or something simple, though I don't know why that would have happened while the truck was down. If I recall, the ABS module is hooked to the body/underhood harness, not the engine harness, so I would think the module and the harness it is connected to wasn't ever touched during this whole process.

 

Check the brake fluid level switch/connector

 

Cleaned the crud off the cluster to see brake warning better. Note the half tank of old crusty gas, will be looking to fill up with new here after we do radiator swap.

Fluid level above sensor on reservoir. All fuses good. Hard like no vacuum booster sometimes. First pump feels more normal. Seems like a vacuum leak really, but then why would that trigger a brake warning?

Fluid level switch/connector looks fine.

Radiator just showed up, will swap that.

 

As far as the "check brake system" warning goes, the FSM only gives advice to check the fluid level switch in the reservoir. However, there is a vacuum warning switch on the vacuum booster. My guess is that is sensing the low vacuum boost and telling the driver info system to give you the warning. The FSM doesn't mention the vacuum warning switch being capable of setting off that warning, but since vacuum is the problem you're having, that would make the most sense.

 

There is some boost when you first apply brakes, but not so much after that. Here's the brake reservoir setup.



Wouldn't it seem to be a vacuum leak somewhere? Then again, if the only thing vacuum is doing is going between the vacuum pump (which is still the original pump) and the brake booster diaphragm shown in the picture, where else could it be leaking?

 

My thought was that it could be producing weak vacuum that you use up with the first press, rather than it being a strong vacuum source and leaking out. But I don't really know, never been in a Tacoma with vacuum boosted brakes. The only path is the pump to the booster, so for it to leak it would have to be the hose or one of the two parts.

This is all hazy but there was a lot of discussion about vacuum pump, non vacuum pump, etc in the other guy's thread who wanted to use this for his non vacuum boost truck. I don't really know the history of the engine and how much he tinkered with it, but I would question whether the pump was removed at some point and reinstalled improperly. I'm pretty sure it was removed and had a block off plate put in its place because of its intended use in a TRD OR. Then that didn't work so the engine was removed and sold.

Or was the pump missing when you got the engine and you installed your own from the old engine onto it?

 

vacuum pump was on it when I got it, I swapped it back to the original pump. If it had a block off plate wouldn't it generate basically no vacuum?

 

If it came to you with a pump on it and you swapped that pump for your pump, then the plate isn’t there. I’m not exactly sure how the vacuum pump operates, I know according to the FSM there should be an o-ring or two on the tip of it.

I was thinking when the seller sold it he may have slapped the vacuum pump back on it (possibly improperly) and sent it and it never got touched again until now. But if you swapped yours on then that isn’t an issue, so long as yours was installed correctly.

If the block off plate was on, the pump wouldn’t be able to be installed and there would be nowhere to hook up the vac hose for the booster.

 

The pump should generate more than 90 kpa negative pressure @idle. Test it if you have a gauge.

I bet the o-ring is messed up. Probably order new ones before taking the pump off

Note that SM states o-rings are not reusable. Check hose as well.
