Agreed, from the description I read a while back on the original motor seller’s post, it seemed like they verified the motor wasn’t physically broken and chalked it up to the engine being a vacuum pump engine in a non vacuum pump truck and that’s all.

It was an interesting and informative long ride-along. I think the premise was this engine was apparently discounted with the stated issue going into it.

Glad OP was able to get this problem solved with the help of some stellar TW members.

Hopefully this serves OP well and for a long time. Do your own oil changes now! Thanks for keeping all posted.

And so it continues. We replaced the center seal at the oil pump input, which was definitely the leaking thing. Put the thing back together, drove a couple miles and it started leaking again, looks like it took out the seal again.

Weird thing is the torque converter didn't slide in through the seal very well, which is strange. The surface that slides in looked sort of smooth, but there are tiny ridges on the end, maybe that's what did it, or maybe the torque converter is bent and is now wobbling which took it out? The oil pump it mates to didn't seem to have any play, so suspecting the torque converter is damaged somehow.

Anyway, we're pulling the tranny to diagnose. Here's the pictures of the end of the tranny once we got it out.

Yeah, I can't tell you how relieved I am that the thing that turns the transmission is indeed turning the transmission :)

Looks like torque converters are only a couple hundred bucks if that's all it is. I don't quite see why it would be bad though, the tranny shifts just great through all the gears, no sign of failures at all, just leaks again.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
You may also want to make sure your flex plate is true.

Yeah, we're slowly pulling tranny back out, looking at getting a low mileage swap, found a unit with under 75K miles that comes with a torque converter and a warranty, which would give me another 100K miles on it presumably. Hard to get motivated, but it's been over six months, time to wrap this thing up one way or another with a tranny. Bought an F-250 to drive in the meantime, I miss the Taco though, very good trucks these are...usually.

With the curved windshield and "semi-automatic" transmission?
I had one for a while, wish I had another. Could completely remove the engine in about 15 minutes.

I had a 1973 Formula V that had a stripe at the bottom of the doors with FV on it. It also had the curved windshield. I took that car down every trail I could find.

The flex plate and torque converter didn't have any wobble in them when truck was running, looking through the hole and just watching them. I heard that we'd need to replace the oil pump, some kind of carrier bearing, seals and torque converter, which sounds like I'll have another parts bill (don't know how much) to put into an old transmission, and maybe we're doing something wrong and it wouldn't work still for some reason.

I found a transmission off a 2019, supposedly it fits, do I have to program it, or will it just work?

If I don't manually reset them, will the computer eventually learn them as it drives?

    Probably.
You scanner should have the function to reset. Takes a minute.

Nope. DEF systems died on two Ram diesel 6.7's, trying to figure out whether to throw all that stuff in the bushes and go on a DEF diet, or spend thousands to fix an annoying system. One quit and says I have 150 miles left to get it to a dealer or it will limp at 5mph. That kind of thing explains the temptation to go on a DEF diet.

I probably should bite the bullet and get a tranny with less miles and throw it in the Taco, maybe it will fix the problem, guess it should.

I also wonder if the crank reluctor being off threw the flex plate off which took out the bearing the torque converter rides on, which took out the seal. No idea.
