I've used a cot with a thin blowup sleeping pad and that's been great.

Use a Teton foam cot pad on mine, never had any luck with inflatables.

    https://tetonsports.com/products/adventurer-camp-cot-sleeping-pad

More storage room, used to have a futon mattress, but took up too much room with all the dirt bike gear I take, can fit a lot of things under the cot and beside it. I’ll pull the cooler a few other things, it is still tight but all I need is to crawl in and out. If the weather is nice I’ll pull the cot and sleep outside. Use the truck a lot while not camping so didn’t want anything too permanent like a sleeping platform either.

My only complaint is, should have bought a hi-rise topper, but got a deal on this one. Though do skim the classifieds for one.

    Got it - Thanks.
My alternative is the ground tent - which I do enjoy... But sometimes the terrain is just not suitable for a ground tent. Good point on the ability to put things underneath (storage) while sleeping. I had not seen this. - Now you have me looking at cots!:(
Found a cheap one on CL, but noticed it is 50lbs!! :bananadead: I see the Roll a cot is 10 lbs  - But $160! :rain: Figures!

Used to do the tent thing, but hate setting up tearing them down, have a bad back…sleeping on the ground kills me.

I shove a bunch of stuff under there, have a couple 2X4’ folding tables, little buddy heater, fishing tackle box that I use as a fastener parts bin for the bike, couple other things. They aren’t cheap, but total worth it. Found a second one at a thrift store for $25.

Quit using tents a long time ago, can see the futon I used to have on the hood of my old ‘92. Super comfortable, but cumbersome. The tent in the pic is one of my buddies. There were three of us on this trip, one guy rode in the back on the futon. Good times!

I recall a few trips where the guy not driving would often crawl into a sleeping bag in the bed of the truck for a comfy nap...

    Different times those...

Yep, we did a few trips like that, 3 dudes with mountain bikes and gear in a regular cab Toyota pickup. The last trip we all took was from Tucson to San Diego in the middle of summer, 105-110° heat across the AZ/CA desert, the friend in back was suffering. We sorta parted ways after that one… :)

I have had the larger 72" x 32" version for 20+ years. I've considered getting the narrower, shorter 67" x 28" one over the years to give more room in the bed but have never pulled the trigger. I simply have never had to spend a ton of time back there in poor weather. And when I have settled in to say watch a movie, while maybe a little cramped I was never uncomfortable.

Any of you using this ever gone to the smaller size? If yes, thoughts?

I went with the standard size roll a cot (28" x 74" x 15") after debating it for a while. I thought to prioritize space / storage. Ive seen thw light!

If i'm sleeping in the back, it is because I was somehow unable to deploy my ground tent... (typically because of unsuitable ground conditions) so it will not be a long term issue.

-unless the cot experience convinces me to change my ways...

You b@stards got me to spend more $$ to aquire MORE stuff in my quest to get rid of stuff and keep things lighter and simpler...
    :D:annoyed::spending::p

So thank you... I'm eager to give this set-up a try...

I dont have the long bed, but I do have a nifty cap-tent that seals up the rear with a screen and solid 'door' (as most tents do), and allows me to keep the tailgate and cap hatch open extending the enclosed space so I can stretch out (I am 6'-1"- and also being able to fit the cot 'cause at 74" (6'-2") it would not otherwise fit in the SB either).

The cot is essentially as long as I am, so I've never fit in the back!

I looked for other - hopefully less expensive options, but most have one, or multiple middle legs and very few are lighter than the roll a cot.
10lbs is quite good for a cot and not a significant addition.

I may trim the feet an inch or two (wheel-well-dependent) for additional headroom. I can always use wood blocks for additional height when needed.

    lol! TacomaWorld=bad for the wallet.

I also considered cutting down the legs, but you might feel the wheel well in your side, the bed tension is adjustable however. Since I store things underneath it, was another reason not to cut down the legs. Couple of the things I pull from under there when I get to camp so I don’t feel them in my back.

I just happened to clue-in to what may be a bit of a wrinkle in my plan to copy you LB guys with the cot idea...

I imagine that the LB likely has a non-wheelwell area at the forward end of the bed... and this is where you guys place the forward cot leg allowing the cot to come close to the side of the bed.

    Can you guys confirm?
Is the cot leg close enough to the end of the cot to be able to get the cot leg in that gap. flat against the side of the bed?
(from the pictures above, it does look like the side of the cot does sit against the side of the bed... you guys are also talking about clearing the wheel well under the cot...

My short bed is all wheel well up-forward all the way to the end of the bed against the cab...

    -well that's disappointing...

I'll wait to get the cot and give it a try. This means I'll have to place the cot leg against the wheel-well And I won't be sleeping over the wheel well which is not as space efficient as with the LBs.

It should still work... I'll just have to store more stuff in the rear seat to clear more room. - I may also have things on both sides of me as I sleep, as I migrate towards the middle of the bed for the cot placement...

On the long bed the front legs of the roll-a-cot hit it just enough where you can’t get it 100% flush against the wall but we are talking maybe 1-2” offset. Personally I have not found it to be a problem.

Well shiiiiiiiiit….totally forgot the SB have the wheel well go all the way to the front of the bed wall. They don’t work for me, so I don’t really even look at them. Think your case maybe build a bed platform instead. Maybe try and return it, or sell it at minimal loss. They do pack small, and are great for star gazing however. I’ll even use it to sleep in the back yard when the weather is nice.

Hey look up on Instagram a company called Pack.Products. Appears to be a post college age guy who made a metal frame cot with legs that can be adjusted for height. I don't know to what degree but maybe that left front leg can be removed and just rest on the wheel well.

If I didn't have the roll-a-cot I might be more serious about getting one. even with the Roll-a-Cot I have considered it. But they are a start up but looks promising.
