Funny, I ran numbers for comparison sake not that long ago on this when arguing the strength of the 7.5 front in the first gen Tacoma v Tundra:

    2021 Tacoma DCSB:
    • 75" x 212" w 127.4" wheelbase
    • 4445lb curb / 5600lb gross
    2021 Tacoma DCLB:
    • 75" x 225" w/ 140.6" wheelbase
    • 4245lb curb / 5600lb gross

    2005 Tundra access cab:
    • 74" x 228" w/ 128" wheelbase
    • 4450lb curb / 6200lb gross
    2005 Tacoma access cab:
    • 66.5" x 202" w/ 121.9" wheelbase
    • 3470lb curb / 5100lb gross

Tacoma may be running within the year.. so tundra got its new shoes last week.. 2021 4runner TRD pro wheels. 17x7 with cooper ST maxx 255/80r17 (33s) Ride is better than with the 265/75r16s! and the wheel/tire combo somehow comes up just a hair lighter.

i mounted them up at work on my day off, and they balanced surprisingly well for LT tires too. So far i've found zero rub, even at almost full stuff up front. so. seems like a winning setup

since i do tow with this truck and the TPMS includes the spare, I did also get a full set of denso tire pressure sensors and will program them when the spare sensor comes in. Spare is also getting replaced with a 17x7 steel wheel and the same tire for future brake upgrades

Looks good! I have been pondering this one too. I see lots of first gen Tundras with Tacoma offroad wheels these days.

the taco wheels work.. when i got the truck it had the tacoma TRD sport wheels. but i dont much care for how much further in the wheels sit. the TRD pro wheels sit just a hair past flush with the fenders.

i went 17s because end goal brake wise for this truck (probably not for another year though) is the 14WA calipers up front, sequoia master cylinder and rear disc conversion with newer 4runner rear brakes to match the front. towing, these brakes do indeed leave a bit to be desired

Exactly my thoughts too. 17’s with room for larger calipers make sense on a Tundra meant to tow. I was curious how much love was out there for the stock wheels in terms of authenticity but figure most people aren’t going to judge a first gen down if it uses OEM wheels from a newer gen truck.

The off roads with black and chrome look a little busy on a first gens smoother curves. I like what you did here and with the modern paint it really works.

How much do those wheels weigh? Thinking about doing the same thing next time I need tyres. Brakes aren’t great for towing…

i didn't weigh just the wheels im afraid. if had to guess probably around 23-24 lbs.. according to toyota they weigh less than the old TRD sema wheels.

the trail teams wheels weigh more because theyre beefy, and 7.5" wide vs 7"

so forseeable future. This truck still will be getting long tubes and a full custom exhaust with dual QTP screamer mufflers, I still am trying to locate a donor truck for an interior, and the brake upgrades... past that. i'll be happy for a while.

oh and a roof rack for the cap eventually.

So yea. Axle boot tore a few days ago too.. almost forgot to post that.. axles torn apart and mostly cleaned. Tomorrow a trip to the hot tank to clean it out fully and I’ll reassemble with fresh boots. (I’ve had the boots for 2 years now.. procrastinating is a bitch. Shits been cracked since I bought it.)

Truck is looking great! Completely unrelated, I have a band crimping tool coming today so I can properly replace a steering rack boot. Must have got a stick jammed into it on a previous adventure.

ok. was putting this shit off for a bit... because low and behold it was just as bad as i thought. Today i installed my ACC mass backed carpet meant for an access cab (they dont make regular cab carpet) all in all it took 6 hours of my time, and it fits pretty great other than the passenger side under the seat (i knew that wouldnt be perfect due to the crash sensor access cabs dont have) but final product looks great, im going to put some foam under one spot to even it out, but other than that, im happy. trucks much quieter inside now too.!

Nobody makes a rubber floor option? I had that in my first F150 and loved it. Would be perfect for a legit regular cab work truck.

slowly grinding my AAL spring clamp rivets to get rid of the god awful squeak ive had. Running the overload with the icon AAL leads to the rivet hitting the overload.. so far its MUCH better, but still noticeable on harder bumps. some time this week im going to take the air file to it again and knock down the rivet some more..

pulled my ECU out and tore it open to check it for the magical programing port/pads. Can confirm this ECU has them.. SO the ECU is tunable.. just learning the system is the issue.

It’s fucking ghetto looking. But for the first time in 1 3/4 years, I have a complete interior. All to hopefully have a peaceful rattle free 10 hour trip Sunday to pickup the newest edition. Also. theres going to be another build page soon for the new 02 taco...
