    Hey Troops

Back of my truck bed in equipped with a “Decked” system and I’ve putting on New Shorter Height Canopy, can’t afford a New Rear Bumper with a Swing-Out Tire Carrier.

I’ll have a Roof Rack on the Canopy and plan on putting a basket on it, is anyone out there using their basket as a Spare Tire Carrier? If so how does it work for you and what do you use to secure the Tire inside the Basket? My spare will be a 285/75/16”

Thanks in Advance for any Help or Photos?

    Buffa

When I see anything on top of the roof it makes me wonder what it's doing to their gas milage. I don't have much experience with that but maybe others will chime in.

Sure, people do it. It's definitely not ideal for a number of reasons, but you make do with what you have.

Just be weary of the weight capacity of the basket. While the static weight of a tire is going to be lower than most baskets, you start bouncing around offroad and that tire gets real heavy real quick.

I'd see if you could toss the tire on top of your Decked system. Lower CG, no air resistance penalty, easier to get to. Those Decked systems should be more than strong enough. Bolt a couple D-rings to the top, and ratchet strap that meat down.

Extra spare for both truck and camper mounted on a Baja Rack. Tires are secured by a length of threaded rod through the bolt holes of the rims with a piece of flat stock beneath the rack's rails and a large wing nut on top (<$5) to 'sandwich' everything together. We've made several trips from NC to western states with this setup and never had a problem. Gas mileage is 12-14. Photo from a dispersed site in Black Hills NF.

Just out of curiosity, is that 12-14 pulling the camper?

Yep - higher # is when mostly flat and dpeed 55-60. The Scamp's rounded nose helps. I get 9-12 pulling my brothrt's stick built which weighs about the same.
