I've been in the market for a roof rack. It's hard to find an oem because it's discontinued. I don't want aftermarket that is oem because of quality complaints. And I'm not about to spend a stack for a Gobi/Baja/rhino. I was at work and ran I to a guy welding a fence and thought maybe I'd ask him to build me a rack similar to what he has built. 2x2 main out frame with all your little 3/4 pieace coming across for the base. He wanted 450$. Probably end up being 500 after I have him do some wxtra stuff. What you guys think? Yay or nay it'll end up being 5.5'x4'. full rack.

That's a fair price for a roof rack. I sell mine for the same amount (for Tacomas) and I build them to 5'x4'

    Here's a customer's truck with one:

Not the best picture of the rack, but you get the idea.

That's nice. Truthfully I don't think it'll end up cheaper than 600. Original ally he said 650. Then they changed to 450. We both didn't really fully u derstand each other. It's pretty labor intensive. A lot of welding. He also doesn't know the 6 mounting g points are all different widths.

The mounting points are the tricky part. The first rack I built I must've gone through 3 sets of legs before I got the mounts to where I liked them aesthetically and they bolted up easily. If there's any doubt, just have him build in some adjustability to the mounts (elongated/oval holes) and you can use fasteners that are a bit smaller than the hole and washers to button it all up.

The welding does get tedious- not hard, but tedious. I use expanded steel on my racks and I weld every point of contact because I hate rattles or places that hold dirt or moisture (rust).

Just be careful you don't end up with something like this:

You think the 2x2 square will cause a lot of wind noise? Or should I have him use round tube? I thought square would look beefier but I don't want a constant noise from the wind.

I would use round tube if you weren't going to add some sort of fairing.. The wind noise most people experience is the result of the aero between the rack and the cab. By having a square edge, the wind passing through creates more turbulence and thus more noise.

Where are you located? I have my OEM roof rack just sitting in the garage. I just installed the prinsu rack on my FJ.
