im talking about the slick black thing on front of your hood. Toyota calls it a hood protector and weathertech.com calls it a stone and bug deflector.

Not to hijack the thread, but does Toyota make a version of the OEM rack to fit Access Cab models?

Pretty simple, just takes a bit of time.....First step is to remove the rubber channels that come factory on the roof.Under there are pre-tapped holes to mount the rack. The kit comes with mounting brackets for the front and once they are on,the rack bolts down through them......Total install was about an hour.

I installed tracks on my cab and topper. My profession has me installing numerous racks on every kind of vehicle. I probably do hundreds a year. There's lots of good systems, but I use my rack a lot for many different items and the versatility of a good rack is important. As you can see, I have a three bar Yakima system, but I can move the crossbars to any location along my roofline with the tracks. Overall cost for the base rack, minus the kayak and canoe accessories you see, was about $400. I did the installation in an afternoon.

    th_IMGP6162_d7a3a833436241e308e18ac327c10929481a06dd.jpgth_IMGP6164_27a73dabceb548f8f4823a4bb510eb8437504c89.jpg

To answer the original poster's question, most of Thule's Watersport accessories will fit the Tacoma's factory rack. Yakima offers a couple versions of kayak carriers that will also work well. Neither will require you to install their proprietary base rack. You will want to compare the "J-style" cradles as they carry the boats on their side, thus allowing you to transport two at a time. However, be mindful of weight limits. I do not know what Toyota lists, but third party testing rates your roof at 165lbs. Also additional lines securing the front and rear of the boats to the vehicle, not just lines securing the boats to the rack, are required.

Since you already have a rack, I recommend this route, however next time, go for the aftermarket Thule or Yakima rack as they are much stronger and more versatile.

Did you follow the instructions and put your front crossbar 6 inches from the window seal. I did and it is so loud. Does that wind deflector work?

Hey Jersey,I'm not answering for WW but I found that the fairings made a huge difference on the vehicles I had with Yakima racks.Without it I had a deep rumble from up there and this cut it out completely......Look cool too!:D

I have a fairing too although didn't have it on when I took the photos. The roofs of our trucks are so thin, there is no sound deadening at all so any rack will cause some kind of noise, but a fairing almost eliminates the noise.

I had Yakima with the fairing on a jeep liberty - it helped but there was still a pretty loud whistle when you hit 65 mph.

SQUAD314- thanks for the reply on the install. Is there additional noise on the OEM with the cross bars out? when they are tucked in? I'm still on the fence.

Lose the OEM Bugshield, it will remove the paint from under the 5 clips on the hood.

No, they only have it for the double-cab due to the length of the cross-bars. They stow in the rails when not in use.

Pull off the black trim strips on your roof. Snap off the two front clips in the channel. Cut the weatherproof adhesive covers off of the threaded inserts in the roof and bolt the roof rack on.

    It's very easy.

See post 26 for a brief look........I'm trying something which I haven't seen yet.We have a Yakima rack system designed for vehicles with factory side rails. The towers are called Lowriders and I'm going to attempt to mount them to my Tacoma rack in its stowed posistion. This way we can have one Yakima system that will live on the truck but can be moved to our Odyssey when needed. Our bike racks rely on the round bars and any other attachments we may want will be compatible.I had a set of Q-Towers for a short time but I moved them with this idea in mind.Basically my Toyota rack will be side rails but can be deployed if needed.I plan on fastening on my Yak system in the next couple of days and I'll post up some pics when I get a sec.

It's been so cold here since I put them on they've just stayed stowed....I'll extend them before hitting the road tomorrow and give you a report.

Lowriders are definitely not designed for the Factory Tacoma rack. Even though they don't list the fit, the Locking EZ Rider is the tower that would fit but both the Locking EZ Rider and Lowrider were discontinued last month for a brand new tower that will fit all racks with rails called the Rail Grabber. The problem with the Lowriders on the Tacoma rack is that the Lowriders are designed for rails that are elevated above the roof, like what's on the FJ *and Odyssey) . The Lowrider doesn't have the mechanical advantage to work on the Tacoma's racks, but the Locking EZ Rider of the new Rail Grabbers do.

Factory Roof Rack, except I have a bike carrier on it. I also did the install myself. It wasn't bad at all. Go for it!
