    Hey everyone!
I'm looking to get a roof box for my 2013 DcLb tacoma with a camper top over the bed and need some help deciding on a roof rack. If anyone has experience for the best budget racks and whether the rack should go over the cab or topper please chime in. I'm also not sure how most roof boxes are mounted.

I think your roof rack choice should be driven by what you want it to do. What do you want to carry on it? How much of a gas mileage/wind noise penalty are you willing to accept?

I'm looking to get a Thule roof box so I can store gear in it and free up space while living out of my truck. I want it to be as aerodynamic/quiet as possible!

I've never owned or used a roof box, but I've heard plenty of people say that they're very noisy. They might be more aerodynamic than your average rectangular case, but you'll still have to deal with increased noise and a loss in fuel efficiency compared to stock.

If I was in your situation, I would explore other options before committing to this one. Back row delete, bed drawers + bed cap, anything but a big box on the roof.

Bingo. What are you going to be using your roof rack for? If you're looking for budget, there's a long thread about the Hooke Road roof rack. Lot's of good insight there. I bought because I really only needed something to attach my awning to. I don't do much wheelin' at all. I camp but that's about it. In the end I probably would have gone with something better, Prinsu or Victory. Hooke Road's roof rack is limited by the fact that you can only bolt down using the existing holes or drilling your own holes. Prinsu and Victory crossbars are extrusion so you can bold anywhere along the crossbars.

All that being said, figure out what you're going to use it for first. If you can, plan ahead for all possible uses and make your decision based on that. I'm just going to run my Hooke Road until I build my own.
