    I’m interested in getting a roof rack for my 3rd gen. The 5 foot bed just simply isn’t enough for my construction job. The question I have is has anyone ever experienced roof leaks? I know you silicon the bolts but does it hold up? Also, does it look weird without the weather stripping or should I cut it up and place it back where there aren’t any bolts? Thanks for the insight in advance

    I've done it twice now with silicone and have had zero leak issues.
    Also did the clean install and put the weatherstrips back;

    I installed the Toyota roof rack with the parts provided and it leaked like a mofo. Re-installed it while generously using silicone caulking, and all has been good for 1 1/2 years now.

    I have the uptop alpha rack. Punched holes in roof striping and used silicone. No leaks. Measure you holes carefully before punching. Buddy did a Martin rack and removed the stripping. His doesn’t leak and does not look weird. Most people probably wouldn’t know it’s missing. I would try to use punch and do it with stripping but if it doesn’t work or your holes are off just get rid of it. Don’t have to go crazy with silicone but put a pea size in each hole and put it on threads of bolt.

    Just installed my roof rack a few days ago, I sliced up the weather stripping enough to fit the mounting brackets.

    If you're in the northern areas, use marine silicone sealant, they are designed to withstand salt.
