Matt, Yeah this shop wants to warranty it and give me back a “new” truck. Honestly I would be ok spending less and not have “ perfect”.

I’m sure it would look very nice, but I agree with you, probably not the best value.

One last thing to consider, I left my bed and tailgate alone because:
    1) It was only surface rust.
    2) I’m going to put more dents and scratches in it anyway.
Maybe someday I’ll get around to putting in a spray in bedliner, but I’d recommend against having cosmetic bodywork done in the bed.

I use a 60 gallon 10.2 CFM @ 90 PSI air compressor. It’ll constantly run when you want to use a DA sander - but for just spraying paint, you can get away with a lot less. It’s High Volume Low Pressure, when you’re spraying at 15-25 PSI your air lasts a lot longer.

I’ve painted entire sides of double decker buses with an $80 harbor freight gun, you don’t need an expensive one. It’s how you use it that matters.

Started with - Clear coat was dead - pitted rust heavy scratches - small dents, parked outside since 2004. 212,000 miles - Rusted roof. Heavy used for dump runs and material loads. Painted wheel trims ( not on rear yet).

The door variation of color was from cans from the same vendor... painted in sections on 4 different weekends. I found the best solution last (of course) - using a wide line graffiti nozzle.

This was a test of what could be done with a single stage rattle can base (8 cans) and 2 stage clear coat. Make sure your mask filter and eye protection are fume rated or the clear coat will destroy lungs and eyes. Suit preferred. Single mask covering full face required.

The added lettering and image at back of bed were test placement for decals that I overlaid on the actual trimmed truck photo.

Not perfect - but engine got new pump, timing belts, hoses radiator, alt etc. Just added a bed crane. Should be good for another 150K. New rear HD bumper next. So many projects so little time.

How does one replace a roof? Weld a piece of sheet metal in it's place?

I had had old Datsun 1600 pickup years ago that someone at one time put new roof on from a doner truck. They took out the glass out and cut the pillars, and you couldn't tell. It was a good truck and I put a lot of miles on it, eventually dropping a 2 lt into it. Paid $400.00 dollars for it.

Yep, Next project is finding a top in good shape for 91 dlx toy truck extended cab. May be hard to get. I am torn between a new top or simple sheet to add a rack to hide it (for grand daughters to use as first car). Plate will be the simplest with my welding skills. Everything else is in great shape for an outside parked car. Figure they are turning 12 and might want to learn a bit of auto before high school. Just rebuilt front of engine/ new shocks / carpets less than 10k miles ago (ignored pistons and valves as runs great - new timing belts, wp, bearings, radiator). This has been passed around in the family since it's purchase. I was thinking a sky blue paint with a surf board beach wrap on the bed... It needs a home - may be it's last in family transplant. Best 10K ever spent on a truck in 95 from parents.

Sad to see the latest Tacomas - mileage on both of mine is the same 20 mi/gal - and loads are larger on both this and the 2004.
