So, I'm admittedly new to pick-ups. I mean, I have moderate knowledge of them, but I'm nowhere near the level of y'all. I've been waiting to buy my first truck for years, and I was so excited about the Tacoma redesign, and I finally had a chance to drive one nearby, and I loved it. I do, however, have once more question before I pull the trigger.

Basically, I love the truck - great test drive, it's beautiful, been back to the dealership several times, tons of videos, etc. - BUT, I hate to buy a vehicle without doing all the research I can as to safety. I know the previous iteration of the Taco inspired concern as to roof strength, so I was hoping the ratings would be solid on the redesign, and I could go ahead and buy the truck. I keep checking the IIHS site and general web searches, however, and this test doesn't seem to be getting done.

In short, could anyone even just point me to a place where I could either see results of a test like this, find out whether the IIHS plans to do this test anytime in the near future, and/or where roof strength is even discussed in a way that isn't pure conjecture and/or marketing fluff?

This question is really the sole reason I've joined this board, but I hope to develop more of a presence here if I ultimately get a 2016 Tacoma of my own. I hate to bother everyone with such a new question, but I've just had no luck finding this info. anywhere....

Thanks so much for any and all help.

They haven't tested it yet. Pickup trucks are usually not a priority for the IIHS. Rest assured its stronger than the 2nd gen. You can tell just by looking at the A pillar.

If you keep it on the wheels, it should be fine.

The roofs on both of my Tacoma's are much more rigid than the convertible top on my Solara ever was.

The 3rd gen may have not been tested by IIHS yet, but you know Toyoda has tested it extensively. The 2016 is up to the new pick up truck standards, it is one of the major reasons for the update. Mike Sweers as spoke about the high strength steel that has to be stamped while HOT on the 2016 Tacoma passenger cell. It was one of my main reasons for holding off for the new 3rd gen update. This design is far superior to the previous generation as far as passenger safety is concerned.

NHTSA rollover rating is a 4/5 according to Edmonds.

I'm not going to down play any safety concern with any vehicle and while anything is possible in the event of an accident, rollovers aren't that common. I'm sure the roof will be sufficient for a roll over, under "normal" rollover circumstances

Thanks so much for all the information, guys. I think I'ma do it!

Just gotta find the right dealer. I've been in Florida the last couple of years, but my wife and I are hoping to move out to Utah in the next couple of months if I can just find a job. She's already got a position ready for her in Salt Lake City when we get there.

Hope all's well, and thanks again for the additional information - it's really helped me feel more confident about the decision.

Have a solid rest of the night, folks!
