Roof top set up plan top or rack?

After taking a trip out west this year, the wife and I want to go back. We have been talking about roof top tent eventually for the truck, well next spring is the deadline, so we can go back out west in June.

so this is where I need some help.
I plan to get a hard shell RTT, this will reduce drag above the roof line. Haven’t decide on brand yet, but something that has an annex will be a must. In Maine we will get rain, if all goes as planned, maybe even some winter camping. Also for privacy and maybe dog sleeping.
Currently, I have a softopper and would like to put a rack on that allows for bed access from the annex. However, depending on price I am not against putting a cap on.

So, I’m looking for ideas, thoughts and suggestions to wtf should I get.

1-hard Shell RTT with annex, and maybe built in rack for canoe or couple kayaks.
2- either over the softopper rack or shell with rack for RTT With my fat ass and wife.

I will also probably have to upgrade suspension, hope to hold out another year, but understand I’ll be adding some weight.

I like the idea, but starts at 7 grand, not a number I like. Also, one piece, I’d rather some flexibility. Like I take my softopper off in the winter and run a tonneau

I almost ordered a bed rack during the Labor Day sales, but decided to hold on.

the main reason, I want to find one that attaches like the one I currently have.



I feel that this spreads the weight better and won’t push out the sides of the bed.

I can’t seem to find any pictures of some that do this.

 

Uptop overland makes a rack that goes over soft toppers. Another brand does too but I forgot the name. Desert armor, ikamper, roofnest, and another company make those clam shell hardshell rtt that has those giant annexes

 

I think Mobtown does as well.

I'm also looking into the Desert Armor Shop Warrior, though not the XL. They're local to me so I'm going to stop by their place in the next few weeks and check it out. They just came out with a V2. Let me know if you want me to do any recon for you.

 

Please do share what you find out. The musts haves are, hardtop, handle my fat ass plus wife, be able to have annex, be able to manage winter camping.

 

Is the rack you are currently running custom?

 

It was given to me, it was from a 2nd gen. It was order from California and then coated after he realized it was starting to rust.
