The only reason I would get one is out of laziness and comfort, looks easy to put up and I think most of them have a foam mattress in them already (100x better than sleeping bag on uneven hard surface) but I don't even use my truck for camping..

I've got a GSD and logistically it would be a pain (90lbs) to get him up into and down from a RTT. Still considering a RTT and just have his kennel in the bed under the tent so he is still covered.

I got a tent that you can enter from the annex. It's a fully enclosed room, floor and everything. We just got it so we're working out the kinks, but next time our dog will sleep down there on a dog cot.

I didn't think about the annex -- that would be a good option too!

That was a stipulation of mine. I wanted the kind of tent/annex where I could enter the tent from the annex. That way if it's raining, I can get dry and clean and then get in the tent.

If your camping in Bear country it gives you a bit more of a secure feeling sleeping up higher, sure the bear might sit on your hood and bounce you out but whats the odds of that!
I like RTTs, definitely something I'd like to get.

I'm going on 60 years now and have camped every which way. My RTT has been a great addition to the experience. Predator or prey, is up to you on which you are when "camping".
    To each their own.

After watching all the cool overlanders use them, I looked into RTTs. The pros and cons just don't justify it for me.
Plus my hammock is just *so* damn comfortable and versatile. RTT is too single-purpose. I can pack a hammock in both the truck and my backpack. I have zero reliance upon ground conditions, just 2 tie-off points. Which are in abundance here.

Hammock + tarp + 40 degree bag + 30 degree underquilt + bugnet (as needed) = comfort in nearly any weather this state can throw at me. Plus, sleeping on thin fabric is perfect when its hot and humid. In total, I may have spent not quite $200 for the set up.

    You do you, though.

    I'd think the complete opposite.

Figure you usually have your food under the tent in the bed the bears will be coming right to you. And sorry to say but a full grown bear standing on its back legs will be just as tall as it. And in case you forgot bears can climb...

sometimes finding two good points here are hard. I'm thinking of using a hammock again when I get my bed rack. I've been using a ground tent right now, but thinking hammock attached to bed rack and a tree. Easy to do.

Relentless front and rear bumpers, Warn M-8000S Winch, Relentless RockSliders, bigger tires, bed cover RTT ... and more big changes in the works.
I struggled with the same decision, cost vs usefulness. I have ground tented some and hammocked some. I spend at least 1 night a month out camping. Since buying a RTT late last year, I have spent over 45 nights in it. About 1 dozen of those would have been hotel stays otherwise. I love my RTT. I still ground camp and hammock, but the RTT is the main stay when camping near any sort of road access now, or when doing trips dependent on the truck.

I've camped and slept in my backpacking tent on the ground in the Flathead valley, B.C. one of the highest concentrations of grizzly in North America, not counting Alaska, and had no problems, For the most part they want nothing to do with you. If you smart with your rooftop tent, garbage and food you should avoid any problems. Being up higher in a RTT gives you a better feeling even if its not as secure as you think.
I've never heard of an attack/injury ever on a RTT user by a bear.

Thats exactly it, just a false sense of security.

Ill bear or smell of food or something they want it doesn't matter where the fuck you are lol.
But yes, proper food storage and garbage storage you should be ok regardless of where you camp.

Love the look on the bears face like "oh sorry didn't realize you were up here, I'll go away now"
