Like I mentioned previously I prefer ground camping with a 3 person high end back packing tent . before the tent is used at home I apply water proofing to all the seams and especially to the rain fly . I've been doing this for years with no water intrusion into the tent whatsoever

As for making the ground comfortable I usually will with a pine bough sweep the area to remove rocks and pine cones . if I to expect cold weather I will gather up pine boughs and place them in a overlapping position in the area where the tent will be

Next the blue tarp is laid over the pine boughs then the tent over the tarp . i 've been using a high end REI Mummy bag rated to -20° and quite comfortable . for added comfort I also use a back packing pad under the sleeping bag , no need for a cot or air mattress

This same tent and mummy bag , I've also have slept very comfortably in the Desert even during strong Santa Ana winds nearing 50mph no issues

I've back packed the Sierras a lot prior to entering the Marines also ever slept in a military pup tent with no floor in foul weather ?? , yep you get used to it very quickly and adapt and overcome

I still to this day prefer ground camping and would never consider a RTT

    Edit ...
I learned a lot about cold weather survival and camping while in the Marines at MWTC Bridgeport Ca

I keep hearing this. The 33" tires help with highway mileage, I clean my airbox/filter religiously, my foot stays out of the floor (target 2k RPM or under constantly), proper spark plugs and clean injectors and I try to stay as aerodynamic as possible (no roof rack and low mounted RTT over bed). 60mph is my target speed so I follow big rigs when I can. I go through less gas and often end up passing the people that fly by me because they need to stop for gas. You'd be amazed how much extra fuel you burn going 90mph!

Also, definitely make sure your alignment is proper and your tires are correctly inflated. Those two have had a bigger impact on my mileage when off than anything else.

Well, you're a Marine, so you could use a rock as a pillow and be fine. :p Marines will find the damnedest places to sleep. I like your style though; keep it light, keep it warm, and prep your campsite.

That's a good point @Snowy made about the type of parks and camping accessibility in your specific region.

It's true, not a lot of wide-open camping to the Eastern half of the country; lots of low hanging trees and branches (my truck is pinstriped all to hell underneath the plastiderp), there's mud and other crap (so that's actually a pro for RTTs vs ground camping); no public land, most places are ORV parks with designated camping areas (so you don't really need an RTT), and other places to wheel are likely gonna be illegal/trespassing, in which case you probably won't be camping. Looks like a different ball game in the West, and I'm honestly fucking jealous you asshats get to live there and see all the amazing stuff nature has to offer.

Now, let's not make this a web-wheeling dick-measuring contest. It's not about who wheels "harder" than who... it's honestly kinda funny and I'm chuckling just thinking about it

    "I wheel harder than you!"

    "Nuh uh! I do!"

    "NU uhhHH!"

Some have RTTs and only wheel in off-road parks, with designated campgrounds.

So.. there. Fucks given = 0.

Buy what you can afford, or prefer.

Don't let @Snowy fool you, he had to buy a trailer to drag his junk to the trail because it rode too rough on the highway, he's a big softy:luvya:.

Voted fad because I still don't see what a RTT can do that my 6 person tent and a cot can't, plus I would tear it right off the truck driving to the campsite. I would like to toss one on a off-road trailer some day if I ever move to somewhere i could consistently use it and store it and had $$$$ to burn.

How does a tent and a bed do more than another tent and a bed?

It's not about what does what over what, it's about preference and need.

Save me a few grand and I can leave it all setup to do some spontaneous night wheeling or even wheeling the next day on a multiday trip.

Hey that all could change, I used to make fun of people with extra fuel cans until I smashed my tank up so bad I have to carry one when out wheeling because my range blows.

    That isn't a design feature.

That's a side effect of buying what you prefer to use. ;)
