Here they are. The hexagonal portion gets sheared off and they're really not expensive. The only downside is if you want the tent off you have to cut it off as well. I keep mine on so that's not a problem. Hope this helps!

I second the previous post about just covering it under insurance.

I contacted my insurance provider and sent them a copy of the receipt for the tent as well as photos of it installed. I've got $2,000 worth of theft coverage that costs me a total of $32 per year on our auto policy. If the tent was to ever get stolen, I'd just need a police report and would have a check in hand within a few days.

Nothing will stop a dedicated thief. If they want the tent and I've left the truck unattended long enough... it's theirs.

Looks like the TENTS are becoming well known for being a valuable and easy theft item. There was a guy in our 4x4 group here in BC that a TEPUI stolen off the back. - no insurance for him!!
We found this set online and have been using for about a month. They seem legit and so far my tent still on the back of my truck :bananadance:

There is a company out there called Pine & Steel that sell rooftop tent security locks & security nuts. I got mine from them. Seems like decent hardware.

Any security is better than no security, but go into the MTB thread and ask how fast you can cut through a cable. The answer is seconds, and many a bike has been stolen on that false confidence.

They'll fit in a truck bed lickety split.

Also: make sure to research defense of property. A fair number of states will put you in the pokey or generally make your life pretty difficult for a while for defending "property" that isn't a home. General statement, not necessarily directed at your response.

I've cut a gunlock with a leatherman before. Legit bolt cutters is way overkill.

Oh that cable is long gone, took it off to use the tent and never bothered with it again. If someone wants my RTT bad enough they'll take it, not worth the trouble of wrapping that cable around it and locking it anymore.

Been cable free for over a year now I think and no one has jacked it yet

I park in the garage at night, but otherwise safeguard free as well. Just would hate to see someone get their stuff swiped like MTBs around here ALL the time "because I had a cable on it"

Common thieves don't want your rooftop tent. They want something easy to steal and fence for cash so they can buy drugs. Or they want your cash, or your drugs. If someone is going to steal your rooftop tent, they aren't your average crook. They want your tent. I'd say the chances of someone stealing an installed rooftop tent are only slightly lower than getting struck by lightning. But that's just me. Personally I'd just make sure your insurance policy covers it.

likely true. but I have a couple friends who've gotten theirs stolen not far from where i live, and see posts about it here and there on local facebook groups. Figure the more safety, the better, and at a minimal cost.

And before anyone says "live in a better area" lol San Diego is hardly a bad area to live, and none of my friends tents were stolen in shitty parts of town. Scumbags are everywhere, and mobile.

No offense intended to anyone but this is kind of a stupid thread. There is always going to be at least some risk if you leave expensive stuff bolted to the outside of your truck. If your worried about it then take it off in the months it’s not being used and when it is on there you use the same theft deterrents as you would with anything else. Chains, cables, security fasteners. Is this really something people can’t figure out on there own without being told?

Insurance is the smart option, with some decent theft prevention. Also not advertising with stickers that say padagucci , I have expensive stuff inside the truck, I’m cool. Fly fishermen get rip off a lot, parked at access sites. Just my experience.
