Anyone have offroad experiences with rooftop tents mounted on the tracks of a retrax pro xr tonneau cover? I'm curious how the system have worked for other people. I've noted the aluminum tracks are sensitive to probable over tightening the nuts on a yakima outpost.

It works well, but the key is not to over torque the bolts on the rack system--I have a yakima outpost, and overtorqued the bolts, which damaged the rails and could have caused problems. I ended up having replace the rails. As long as the bolts are fastened the ~6-7 Nm, the system works quite well.

I've had no problems with my retrax XR cover with Yakima outpost HD rack, and RTT.

Beat the shit out of it offroad, several trips, and hasn't moved at all yet.

I'm pretty sure the people that have stripped the rails used the wrong rail nuts during installation. There were small and large rail nuts with my outpost HD kit. The large spacers fit snugly.

I'd probably go with a more solid bed rack than the outpost HD. It vibrates more than I would like offroad. Something like the uptop overland bed rack with 6 contact points instead of 4 looks pretty good.

Been waiting two months for my retrax to deliver. Hopefully ships in a day or two. I have an uptop overland bed rack waiting to be put on. Hope it’s a good setup!

Yakima used to use smaller t-bolts that could warp the retrax rails. They changed to larger t-bolts that have a lot more surface area and should solve the problem as long as you don’t go crazy with torquing them down. You can email yakima and they’ll ship out the larger bolts if you don’t have them.

Seems to do the trick for me! I’m not a hardcore off-roader by any means but the occasional class 4 road or impromptu jeep trail hasn’t seemed to bother mine whatsoever.

I’ve been looking at getting the Retrax compatible rack from UpTop to match my alpha roof rack, but I can’t seem to convince myself that I’d be cool without the height adjustment that my overhaul hd offers. Definitely post pictures when you get everything setup!

Absolutely, will do! How you like that alpha rack? I’ve been eyeing that thing too!

Love the build. What components did you use to hold your shovel? piecing my yak outpost and rtt build together now.

The upTOP alpha has been awesome! The paint match looks killer! Only downside is it’s definitely not as sleek going down the road as a prinsu so you take a 2-3mpg hit for sure.

For sure. Damn. I was just about to buy the bravo, mainly because of wind noise I heard they were quiet but losing 2-3 mpg sounds awful. Already lifted and on heavier wheels and tires so I’m not trying to lose much more. Maybe I should consider a prinsu if it’s much better on drag

I mean a lot of it is your driving style also. It might be different in your case since you’re already lifted on bigger tires. I’m sure throwing an alpha or bravo on stock truck would show you the most difference in mpg, but it’s hard to tell.
