Hello, I'm removing 5vzfe from a dblcab 2001 prerunner and I wasn't watching when I removed the flex plate to torque converter bolts while underneath. DAMMIT. So, I guess I'm wanting to know how to tell where the black starter bolt goes on my install happening here in a couple days pulling motor this weekend for new to me eng install. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you

I don't believe it really matters where it was specifically, just be sure to install it FIRST. Some will say to snug them all up and then do another round torquing them down. I started with the black bolt, torqued it down then moved on to the next and torqued that 1 down and so on. No issues.

reads as 'green' but it's black. I believe on earlier years, they used a green bolt. On my 02, it was black.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Just a guess I might be 100% wrong I think the black bolt gives you an index point.

So you have a starting and ending point when torquing the bolts. So easy to skip one .

I never saw them in the earlier years.

I could be wrong but after a bit of help from the good members of this site and some research the odd bolt out " has a shoulder where the threads end that's different from the other bolts". That shoulder lines up all other bolts perfectly as the flex plate is probably balanced and must go square nuts back up to the torque converter. Also makes a good torque ref point.

Exactly. Listen to the factory docs. Black bolt absolutely goes in first, torque it down then move on to the others. The black bolt is physically different and is critical in helping to seat the tc against the flexplate. Must be done to avoid any issues later. Follow factory and start with the black bolt.

OP should be fine even though he didn't mark the flexplate. I did mark it but toyota doesn't specify so whatever.

I should've done it when I had the transmission out but didn't - replace the rear main seal. I even had a new OEM seal on hand, just didn't want to bother since no evidence of leakage.

After all when replacing the flex plate is there an engraving that says Black Bolt here with a corresponding mark on the Torque Converter .

I am not a big AT person most experiences was in converting to manual transmissions

    Nope, there isn't.

I marked it when I removed it but it shouldn't matter. It's not going to be an issue of balancing since you can replace the flex plate (and the converter) with no mention of xx version due to xx balance. All are the same PN. It's simply a matter of start with the black bolt first to "aid in aligning the torque converter". That's it.
