Room for a taller, wider driver?

Well firstly I wouldn't be here if I didn't like Toyotas, but I need some help figuring out which model years might fit me best. At 6' 3" and 260lb-ish I like my Ford x-cab and slide the seat all the way back. Years ago I owned an '85 2wd reg cab Toyota and after about 4hrs of driving my right leg/knee was getting pretty sore so reg cab obviously not an option. Back in 2000 I sat in a brand new Tacoma and I felt like I was looking out the tinted portion of the windshield at the very top. I would prefer to find a factory fit that was pretty good rather than relying on a successful mod to make it satisfactory.

The secondary but very important criteria is off-road features and relative ease of road-side repairs. I have an opportunity to build a small place to live that's on property 7 miles back on old logging roads that were cut in the 1940s. My x-cab long bed makes it but I have to drive about 8-9mph due to stiff suspension and higher tire pressures for load carrying. So the longer term goal for a Toyota is to dump some coin and upgrade the suspension to make the trips in and out a bit shorter and less jarring(Almost impossible to drive the road without having to stop and pee.) Bumpiest road I ever seen.

So briefly, which Tacomas might offer a taller and wider person a bit more comfort, if there are model years with more electronic complexity I would prefer to avoid those, and the suspension will take a beating. Any tips/help is appreciated.

I have a 2016 taco double cab without a sunroof and a 2016 f350 double cab. I am 6'3"/195lbs and 34" inseam/34" waist. The Tacoma is very near my lower limit for personal space and comfort on a long drive. I don't know if I'd recommend any Tacoma for someone 65lbs heavier than me. My issue is mostly leg room and getting the pedal to steering wheel relationship correct, which I think the Taco just can't do well. The 350 rides like a city bus but has so much more space. Different tools for different jobs obviously, but if any taco would fit you it would be a power seat model, which was 2019 and later I believe, without a sunroof. I sat in a sunroof truck and could not hold my head up.

As someone who is 6'4" and tipping the scales at 300 lbs I would say you might want to look full-size. I have a 34 inch inseam and I am at the very limits of my headroom tolerance. If my posture is like my mom would like it, I'm rubbing the headliner (sunroof) a tad. I added some blocks that are sold on here to lift the front of the seat. It helped, but it's not perfect.

I also had to get an automatic because my knee just wouldn't do the clutch without poking myself in the eye.

Look at all of your possibilities and test drive longer than the salesman wants to. Even with the above I still went with the Tacoma due to other reasons.

I’m on my third Toyota small pickup and at 5’8” I’ve still bashed my head a bunch of times getting in and out of them. It’s a ride for small to medium sized men or ones who REALLY love Tacomas.

also 34 inseam with long arms. in a MT so need my leg/foot position correct.

you can do it but like mentioned it is at the limit.

when i got the truck my right thigh went numb every drive due to the flat long seat bottom pushing into the back of my thigh above the knee. i went to a custom upholstery shop and had them contour the seat bottom foam to bucket it at the rear of the seat bottom. that dropped my seating position about 1.5" and took the weight off my thigh totally. that was $200 and now my driver seat is the most comfortable seat i own and can drive for hours comfortably, and i have more head and leg room as a result. but i'm not wide and don't know if this would work for you. if you happen to be in DFW hit me up to have a sit.

I'm 5'9" and have to contort my head getting in so I don't hit it on the roof. I don't know how taller people do it.

I'm 5'11" at 300 lbs. I'm okay with my truck... No sunroof though. Drove a truck with one and I would hit the headliner.

I'm 6'2 220 and overall no one loves their taco more than I do but man the size of a tundra is made for a guy like myself. I'll be bumping up in the next couple years.

    Test drive.

Tacomas have gotten a little bigger since 2000. I'm 6' even, I've never had a size issue with either my old '13 without sunroof or new '20 with sunroof. Obviously, you and I are not the same person so experiences can vary.
Test drive a Tacoma. The 2020 model year is the first with an electric driver's seat, so that may help you some.

I'm 6 foot (6'3 in heels) with a 34 inseam and i have a 2016 tacoma. I find the seat has plenty of room, doesn't cramp my legs and i don't have it pushed all the way back, i feel like it has quite a bit of room, but thats just my comfort level. Try a few different ones out and see what you think.

Go look at the 2020, it's the first tacoma with a powered seat that also includes lowering the seat it might be your best option if your set on a Mid-size truck.

I’m 6’3”, 300 lbs, 32” inseam, most of my height is in my torso. No moon roof and I did add the front spacers on the driver seat. Some day when someone with a 2020 moves into the neighborhood I’ll get a power drivers seat.:anonymous:

I'm 6'1 and fit comfortably. If I was much taller I would have looked at the F150 or Ram.

Awesome thanks for the replies. Yous guys pretty much confirmed my suspicions: Big guy want a big truck. Well I suppose I'll just have to go test drive a few older Tacomas. Can't afford/don't want new. If I find something that works I'll be sure to report back. Thanks again.

I’m 6’ even, 250, 30” inseam. I have to duck in head first or I’ll hit my head, but have gotten used to that. Plenty of head room wearing my ball caps and my seat isn't all the way back. I got a used 2017 SR5 AT and upgraded my suspension and tires for a better ride on washboarded roads. Test drive is must for sure!
