So I got a matching spare and I'm wondering how the programming of the TPMS works on it if I plan to put it into the regular tire rotation.

Do you just reprogram the car to replace the code going out to the spare slot with the code of the wheel coming from the spare slot?

Or maybe I can just clone the ID from the tire being taken off to the spare?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this. I have Carista for a month for free for programming the car side of it, but I'd rather not get a subscription. I do have a TPMS tool that I can use whenever though, so maybe the ID cloning is the way to go?

My spare on my Hitchgate has a sensor and my right front wheel does not. Just need 4 linked and it doesn't matter where they are.

If you have a TPMS tool that is the way to go.

Carista is a great little app, but the subscription is a bit expensive. TechStream and a Tactrix will do it also.

I do 5 tire rotations and all have tpms sensors installed.

To read correct pressures in correct locations you’ve gotta scan your 4 drive tires after rotations and upload that data via OBD.

Guys you know there is no advantage to a five tire rotation right?

Is the rim the on the spare the same as the 4 others? I need to crawl under and take a look.

No. I don't know that. Do you have something I can read on it or a quick explanation? I have five rims and tires when I replaced mine on my 18.

Your spare is going to be a steel rim, most likely the rest of your wheels are alloy.

You won't find any tire shop that will dismount, remount and balance that odd wheel for free.

I bought five of the exact same rim (Method 701s) and five exact same tires (KO2s 285s). I assumed I would need to have my spare out and ready to put into rotation or just do it myself. Just trying to learn some stuff.

Then there is no real good way. Gonna have to old school it and just check your pressures every week.

The TPMS is only a tool to help you maintain tire pressures, you still need to protect your investment with real hand pressure checks.

Just keep the 5th one as the new spare all the time. It’ll be a huge pain in the ass reprogramming the 5th spare every time you rotate. But, if you’re up to wasting time, have at it.

I'm getting ready to buy the 701s in a couple of weeks. Did you get the 16s or 17s? I'd love to see some pics if you have them?

I got the 17s and I love the way they look on the truck. Here are some photos from the last 4-5 months.

I sold my factory spare steel wheel/tire, and replaced it with a matching alloy wheel and same size tire for a spare. No TPMS on the factory spare so no plans for 5 tire rotation, decided it was not worth the hassle.

New upsized spare setup, 265/70 17 E rated:

I sometimes off road in remote lava country and wanted my spare to be same size just in case. Once ruined a tire just driving over a sharp lava rock and need a reliable spare tire setup.

I drove deep into Craters of the Moon last fall and that sharp lava rock stuff made for nervous driving.
