Thanks, I was trying to think of a position to mount the vent somewhere where I can have the can mounted sitting up (like in my picture) or on it's side (with the cap still in the up position) and that's when it occurred to me I can just put the vent on the little red end of the spout.

Yes it is. I might seal up the holes you put in and just do that.
Good thinking on that location. I like it a lot.

I've been happy with Rotopax as I've carried up to three three-gallon size (for UT/AZ). I never did have a leak, but I did buy the self-venting spouts which were a much improvement like any of those eco spouts.

I got a camper shell so I carry my extra gas on the roof so gas fumes don’t build up inside the shell nor do I have to unpack gear to reach the cans. I place them at rear so easy to reach by standing on the bumper or dropping the tailgate.

However, I like the idea of adding the vent with the nipple. That should allow someone to store gas inside the camper (out of the sun) and run a piece of rubber hose to vent fumes outside of the shell.

I ran 2 4 gallon stacked on top of each other on a couple trips to Colorado from California and back with almost no issues.

Only thing I would note is make sure you vent them and if its really hot out side them them periodically. I had one issue where I heard a noise. Pulled over and one of the mounts had popped off due to the swelling they can get when its really hot out and have not been vented recently. We were on our way home on a 14 hour math back to the bay area so were not making too many stops. Luckily with the 4 gallon setups they use 2 so helped me not lose them. If it was a single good chance I could have said good buy and may have saw some interesting things happen depenging if someone hit it or not.
