That's one heck of a deal! I'm a pilot, but not a member of the Air Force. Do they serve the public or is that a military privilege?

    I'm retired military (USAF).

The Auto Hobby Shop on base is for Active Duty/Retirees...not sure about Civil Service.

Unless you damaged them, all turning rotors does is shorten the life. So $40 for a negative benefit, or $140 when you need new rotors.

If you have actually warped your rotors, turning them can fix the problem short term, but they're going to warp again even sooner since you've removed and weakened the material.

I really can't think of a case when I'd consider turning rotors but not replacing them. That pad material buildup (what most people call warping) goes away on its own with some normal driving, for me. But then again, I'm not super hard on brakes to begin with.

You're in luck! I'm assuming this is a machine shop that also does engine block and cylinder head work. Good machine shops are getting less and less common especially in rural areas like where I live.

A quick search of "Turning Rotors" in the title reveals lots of members replace with new ones.

I know if they are warped, they should be replaced.

But if during the lathe process, the rotors don't have too much protruding lip on the outer edges & are within width limitations, they should be ok.

I tested this with my 2003 Honda Pilot which I had turned twice before I finally bought a set of 4 new rotors.

Seems it depends on your braking habits...I'm one of those who begins to gradually brake as opposed to instantly braking during normal driving.

Braking hard should not be the standard as opposed to when it's positively needed.

I used AutoZone for all of the brake parts I replaced on my Pilot.

I'm at 28K miles on my 3 year old Sporty Spice Truck.

I'll evaluate the rotors once I replace the pads when the time comes.

I used to work on the equipment there 15-20 years ago. I sure hope they got a new lathe because the machine they had when I was there was rough.

I'll note that i always go with coated rotors as well, not necessary but they don't get all rusty so quick.

Got over 100K out of the original rotors, I'm 40K into a set of Brembo rotors and quite happy with them.

It's a great benefit, I hate laying on my back in the driveway when I need to work on the truck so having access to the base's hobby shop is a game changer.

$15 bucks a pop here in the SE TN sticks.
There's NOTHING wrong with turning rotors that are in spec.
I've been doing it for decades, and I've always gotten basically the same lifespan out of turned rotor as I did the virgin rotor.
Aside from varying costs, internet misinformation is rampant on this one.
