Rough Country power steps and switch.

I thought I would provide a separate post on this mod. I installed the E steps mostly for the wife. A local shop installed them for the retail price of them on Rough Country site so for me it was a no brainer to have them installed so can't help with that.

However I did not want the ugly Rough Country switch mounted somewhere to turn them on and off so a member of another forum used the Tundra factory e step switch that fits in our blank spot. Part # - 84890-0C010. Then to make it easier to connect/test etc to the pins I had to research and find a company that makes a pigtail as Toyota only has it as part of a complete harness from the Tundra. After searching and contacting 15+ companies this place had one.

Here comes the issue. What wires to connect from the 2 wires of the RC steps and the pins on the Tundra switch. I am not that electronically inclined. I first got the wiring/pin out diagram from @caribe makaira. I thought this would make it easy for someone who was electronically inclined. Nope. My local shop that installed them I tried first. No success. Then I reached out to other member that used the switch, nope he did not write it down. Then I thought ok for sure Rough Country can help right? Nope they were about worthless and kept saying they would figure it out and get back to me. Nope. I got myself a digital thingmajig. I started testing every combination that you could and finally, bingo. Success so I thought I would share the wires to use.

On the switch you use wire 5 and wire 3. The RC wires are not color coded so you have to just try each way so that when connected property the "off" will keep the steps in and not deployed. If you do it backwards it is fine it just has the steps working in the "off" position so you switch them and you are good.

End of the day the mod is not cheap, $180. However I like the factory look way more than the aftermarket switch look. Cheers.

So what wires went where?

 

Wires 5 and 3 connected to the two wires from the steps.

 

So AUTO and OFF function then?

 

Yes that is correct.

 

You going to add step area illumination or is that already included in the purchase?

 

Already included.

 

Only come on when door opens? or unlock?

 

Yeah they are lights that RC provides with the steps and when they are deployed they light up.

 

Did you have any issues putting the switch in the panel? Also what connector did you get from Connector Experts?

 

Yes I read that. But do they deploy (light up) at unlock (door lock) or at opening door?

 

I just sent them a pic of the end of the Tundra switch. They did not have a specific part#

oh sorry. They light up at door open when the steps deploy.

 

Bummer, I thought they'd be tied to the unlock feature. Like illuminate at night BEFORE you get to the Taco. Not that it can't be fixed

 

Like so:


Purchase the connectors, assemble a T harness. Intercept the door Lamp with assembled T harness. Route wires to door boot then floor sill, then to cab floor access plug. Then to outer cab side area to added LED bar to illuminate ground when unlock is selected.
L10 same on Passenger's side door.

If route is too complicated, then use footwell illumination LED connector(s) for same feature. They use same connectors as the door LED.
