Nice! Yes, they really are quality coil overs. I agree that the wheel spacers are probably the issue. Sounds like minor trimming at most.
Did you regear or tune first? Just wondering if I need both or could get by with just one. What gear ratio did you go with? These motors have good mid/upper end, but gutless down low! Did the regear help “gear hunting?” That was my biggest complaint when I had my last third gen with 285s. Love the truck, but haven’t lifted it yet because I know what happened last time..
    Thanks

I regeared before the tune. I didn’t know about tuning prior, but still would have changed the gears anyway. IMO, there’s no tune that can solve a mechanical situation. I.e, the engine makes great power, but spinning a nearly 33” tall tire takes the advantage of gearing. I did 4.88’s, because I don’t plan to add much if any additional weight. Maybe a Decked drawer unit, but that’s it. After the gears, I’m able to hold 6th gear on the freeway, even under slight demand changes, e.g, minor changes in elevation, take overs, etc. The tuning has helped a bit with gear hunting in town, but admittedly, this vehicle’s transmission programming sucks! I’ve had all 3 gens of Tacomas and this is by far the worst for drivability. My 2nd gen was perfect and apart from the aesthetics being better with my ‘21, I wish I still had my ‘11.

Separately, have you tried adjusting the c/o preload? I tried quickly yesterday, but couldn’t get the collar to budge. I was easily able to adjust the Icon’s on my 2nd gen and the Fox’s I just removed, but these Vertex c/o’s are tight. I’m hoping the spanner wrench I ordered will help.

I think regearing is a must for the third gens if lifted and running bigger tires. I agree with you, the 2nd gen is my favorite minus the interior and technology. I’m blessed enough to have a 2015 Pro “supercharged” and this 2016 Off road. Each one has their strong points for sure.
I actually haven’t installed the kit yet. Are you jacking up the front end and taking the weight off the coils first? I will say the spanner wrench is huge and should do the job! I’ve read people are adjusting them.

Yes - unload that coil and then crank it down. These are set at 3 inch from the factory, which makes me believe they already have a fair amount of preload.

I did end up trimming a little corner of the flare off and no more rubbing. It’s only going to get better.

I’m curious how these will settle in, but so far, I’m really happy I pulled the trigger.

    Yikes!

Melt forged aluminum control arms gonna shatter like glass.

I am not an engineer (IANAE), but those look like trouble from the first flex.

Yeah I jacked the front got the weight off and did minor adjustments . I need to do it again on the driver side only . Waiting on a new digital torque wrench so I can install my new spider Trax 1.25" spacers . Then I'll do some more fine tuning of my vertex's.

I got the spanner wrench from rc . It does the job. But also the right Allen wrench and a dead blow hammer works better lol.

Evidently, the spanner wrench I got was the wrong size. Normally, I would use a punch, but I can’t get the collar to move - any tips, or just keep torquing on it until it starts turning?

I will note yes I did spray liquid wrench buster on there to help . Once I got it loose sand from the beach was in the threads and all other road debris so I worked it loose and sprayer brake clean a little bit to clean the grim and gunk in the threads .

Anyone else having an issue with tie rods making contact with sway bar when wheel is almost at full lock? The sway bar drop keeps sway bar from hitting coil over but now I’m having this issue. Could my 4+ caster be causing this?

I have an appointment for another alignment. Need to adjust the lowers forward a bit I believe and ease up on the positive caster with the uppers.

How do you like the RC vortex coil overs for off roading ? I am considering purchasing them myself.

I can say on fs roads or logging roads the ride is so much smoother .

I’m getting mine installed on the 30th. Anyone with an RC lift have to remove the bump stops below the UCAs to get the reservoir installed?
