Hello everyone. I have a 2013 tacoma 4x4 and it's been turning off pretty rough. It seems to shake when I turn the key to off. It runs fine and idles fine. No probelms there, only when turned off. Can it be cause of the cold weather even though the truck is at normal operating temperature when turned off?

    Thanks!

The whole front end of the truck just seems to shake.

Sometimes it's rougher than others. It's a lot of moving parts and energy to all of the sudden stop.

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
My 2014 4.0/6MT is like that. I suspect soft motor mount material - nothing torn or broken on any mounts (that I could find, at least). It seems Toyota built an awful lot of slop into the drivetrain on these trucks to cut down on NVH (noise/vibration/harshness). My 2012 4.0/5AT didn't do it as bad, but I suspect the AT was just dampening the effect.

My 1992 2.4L 22RE/5SP was similar, though. It was worse when the engine wasn't full up to operating temperature, but any engine shutoff would give a pretty good shake/wobble. FWIW, I drove that truck until the wheels fell off, so it didn't seem to hurt anything. :)

Can anyone else comment on if their truck has a rough turn off like the OP? I test drove a 2013 DCSB trd with 40k that I noticed did this and I just want to make sure it's nothing to be concerned about. Thanks!

IDK. It kinda sounds like "Dieseling" ? When you shut off the ignition the cylinder/plug may have a hot spot just hot enough to continue to fire remaining air/fuel mix that is in the intake system. Years ago before Computer this pointed towards timing too advanced or poor / cheap gas. Also sometimes after a long hard high speed run.

    I'd try this.

    - try a full new tank of better gas.
    - Ensure that the cooling system is really OK with no blockage/air bubbles/full/plugged radiator/ not leaking/low fluid etc.
    - Get a scan gauge and check for codes.
    - let the engine run for 30 sec or so before shutting off.
    - Start the engine cold - let it idle for a minute then shut off - does it still do it?
    - Start the engine cold - take it for a short run (5/10 Mins?) then shut it off and see if it still does the same.

So my 2013 is doing this now all of a sudden @ about 90k on the engine. No codes, runs and idles fine, AC is working, only run 93 octane gas. Sounds like metal grinding or something similar when turning engine off.

My first thought was my AC compressor or fan clutch might be going out? Likely?

Check my previous post above yours.... check and advise. Also check the motor mounts (open the hood, set the P brake put it in forward and give it a LITTLE gas then repeat in reverse. does engine lift / tilt to one side??

Mine has done this for as long as I can remember. It didn't bother me really because I've driven hundreds of old diesels that do it too. Seems to only do it after long drives not from idle

I'll add to that list. My '14 will sometimes do a 'rough' shut off as well. Most of the time it happens if it's cold out, I start the truck to move it, then shut it right off (engine is running for < 2 minutes).

But, I've also come back from 4 hour road trips, pulled into the garage, shut it down, and had that 'rough' shutdown, like a motor mount or trans mount is going bad.

It reminds me of a motor running with a dead cylinder. The balance of an engine is based in part on the combustion of fuel - that explosion in the cylinder acting to push the cylinder down is a calculated and expected force that helps to balance (or counter-balance) the rotating masses inside the motor. I figure if you turn the key off at just the right time (whatever the odds are, multiply them by, what, 6?), you can have an unbalanced force (crank is pulling the piston down when that piston should have been 'forced' down) in the motor for a second.

Other than rattling your teeth out, I can't really figure it will do much harm.

That's what I was thinking. On the older carbureted trucks we used to shut them off in N instead of P and I think it helped.
