Newcomer here, and I apologize in advance if I am repeating some of the previous threads. I recently bought a 2001 Tacoma 2.4L 2wd. Has about 140K and have loved the truck. This summer was a particularly hot one in Nashville, and my Tacoma had difficulty firing up once it was warm. Once warm it typically fires up on the 2nd or 3rd try. Starts great first thing in the morning though, and once it is running it runs great- I think it idles around 750-800 RPM if I checked right. This past weekend CEL came on and had code P0420 which I think is the Bank 1 02 sensor. So, in an effort to turn the CEL off and fix the damn starting issue, this weekend the Taco and I are going to get better acquainted.

    My plan is to:

    Clean MAF
    Clean TB
    Clean IAC Valve
    Change spark plugs
    Replace Air Filter
    Replace both 02 sensors

Please feel free to direct me to another thread if this issue has already beed addressed, and I am certainly open to any feedback or experience anyone has to offer with this warm-start issue. I will be sure to post results once the work is complete. I am hoping to take video/pics along the way to help anyone else who is dealing with this.

I ended up doing all of the work above, but I replaced IAC valve and did not replace 02 sensors. The code cleared and have not had any issues after a few hundred miles of driving.

Unfortunately I am still having an issue with the Tacoma having difficulty starting after getting to running temp and then turning off for 20-30 mins. Seems to be a heat soak under the hood. This seems to be the best link to resolve the issue-

p0420 code is better understood as, "all the sensors are functioning, everything is reporting ok, but something isn't adding up". It could be as easy as an exhaust leak, or it could be as bad as needing new cats. As for the warm startup, I think I fixed an issue I was having. ended up changing the charcoal cannister and the issue has so far went away. plus i have much better gas mileage now. May want to look into that if youre nearing or passed 200k miles.
