I washed my truck's under carriage today. Letting it dry in the garage overnight. Tomorrow I go under the truck for some rust prevention. This is gonna be fun!!

I am going to get some RP342 and test it side by side with the CRC HD Corrosion inhibitor. I've heard some say they are the same, but I want to check them for cured finish (tackiness, hardness, etc), resistance to scratching, and resistance to a pressure washer since I pressure wash my frame areas where accessible during the winter months.

I've never been a big believer of pressure washing the chassis once i've rust proofed it. Imo its hard on chassis components taking a chance of blowing out any seals. I've got decent water pressure and a garden hose that does a decent job already.

This is 100% a surface prep issue. Silicon deposits usually collect at the toes of a GMAW weld (where the rust seems to be starting). Those deposits can be a litttle bit of effort to remove by hand (easy with abrasives though), but it’s essentially glass so it’s not bonded to the steel. If you paint over it, that’s going to be the failure point. Sloppy prep procedure.

Now that you've coated your chassis having all that fun....if it was ff, or similar just think you'd need to do the same thing every year. At least with this stuff hopefully its going to last way longer. Btw, good job... truck looks great.

Planning to do a good cleaning on mine and then seeing what I need to take care of with rust-oleum before I apply the rust protection

Thanks bud. I’m taking the truck in for ceramic coating next week. Then SHE’S done!
I installed the MESO stage 1 tail light kit today too (after washing my face and hair in mineral spirts).

And yup, I can’t imagine doing this every year. I’m hoping the most I’ll need to do is a yearly touch up.

Used CRC HD and it is good. Wished I've done this brand new. But I recommend doing this outside and wearing a painter's respirator. You get this stuff on your paint it will be tacky at first and dry on the paint. Cannot imagine the black cans you guys are using overspray like a mother.

For anyone curious, this is the colour difference between black and “natural” Cosmoline.

Spray they edges of the body panels where it meet the edge. That's where your typical rust will start to form on the body sheet

Ohh it’s all heavily coated..trust me!

Also pulled all the little body plugs around the pinch weld and filled it with Cosmoline.

Doesnt look like it in pic 1 otherwise you did a good job. I got overspray all over mine underneath the trucks paint. Had to make sure it went all the way up the seams. You cant see it but once you look under you could totally tell.

    Same here.

So far i swear by those ceramic coatings...at least the one they did on mine. Truck has been bombed by bird poop to no end, (i think its something to with the color of this truck), yet all this crap seems to wipe off pretty simple with a wet rag, even days later...finish underneath is no worse for wear. Haven't noticed any paint dingers either from small stones making a racket against the truck every time i travel my gravel ridden dirt road.

Here's a review that a guy in Ohio did a few years ago...his test method looks well thought out.

37 years working in a nuclear plant taught me the value of wearing protective clothing for these types of jobs.

The application actually wasn't as bad as I feared...and we had a beautiful day here in SE Connecticut. I warmed up the cans using hot water from the tap (114°F), masked my step bars using newspaper and masking tape, and masked the exhaust system using aluminum foil.

@Kruuuzn - Thanks for the advice on the handle, it worked great and I was able to clean it up pretty easily.

    HAHAHAHA

    That’s a great shot!

I wish I had gear like yours. I had to throw my coveralls in the trash. That added $40 to the job.

Yup, those handle contraptions are the cat’s butt aren’t they?

But that must have been the BEFORE shot right? Do you have any AFTER shots?

    :)

I looked like that months ago when it was well over 90 degrees. Must of sweat over 5 lbs. that hot afternoon in those coveralls. Was nice today way cooler. Spent the day raking up leaves here in the northwest corner of connecticut....fall has already arrived.

    Couple questions...

I live in Oklahoma where we have a wide range of weather. Single digits in winter and triple digits in summer. I've never personally owned a vehicle that had rust issues but I think the longest I ever kept a vehicle was 9 years. I've heard that Tacomas are susceptible to rust so I was thinking about doing this cosmoline coating stuff. Is it really necessary or just for you northerners? Is there anything I shouldn't spray it on? Do you just get under the truck and spray everything you can or target certain spots?
