I did it in my driveway on top of car ramps and big sheets of plastic. No over spray to speak of and zero dripping.

How did the cosmoline hold up over the first year? I'm probably going to try to get this done soon.

Side note (not to threadjack), please tell me all the specs of your wheels/tires/offset/lift? Looks perfect, that's the exact look I'm going for on my Sport.

Well i just took another really good look at my 2020 chassis the other day. It was done a 1 1/2 years ago with cosmoline. Its been through a good sloppy salty winter, and spring already. I could find zero corrosion, or surface rust on anything i coated. In fact the job i did looked still very new. This stuff is far better than any fluid flim i've used in the past for lasting. I suspect it'll be good for years with just a minor touchup. Its great to be one and done with rust issues. I bought a 6 pack of cans, but around 5 did the job.

I never thought of using cosmoline on the under side of my truck. I've had many foreign made guns come packed in it over the years and it's a bitch to get off.

Amsoil makes this product that I swear by that's very similar to cosmoline and a tad cheaper. I've coated my Tundra every fall since I've had it and it still looks like new and it's a 2014.

I just went to trade it on a 2022 Tacoma and the dealer was stunned at what good shape the under carriage was in.

Keep checking Amazon. It was out of stock when I tried getting some the first time. I kept checking and it eventually came back in stock.

I just don't get it why many complain cosmoline is more expensive than fluid flim or some others. If its an only one time deal applying cosmoline vs stuff like buying fluid flim every year. The cosmoline is a bargain, even if you need to buy an extra can for future touchups.

Bumping this thread back up rather than creating a new thread. Going to be coating my 22 TRD OR soon. I picked up some CRC Rust Inhibitor. Obviously hitting everything on the underside, but do you guys recommend spraying in body panels as well? I've seen people suggest spraying fluid film in the underside of the doors, the bed sides, and even the hood. Can / should cosmoline be used that way? I'm in the midwest, but not sure if the body panels are even that susceptible to rust?

I used Fluid Film on my 2021 Taco which I was very happy with how it went on and the film it left. On previous vehicles I have used LPS3 and was very happy with it also

Well for what its worth when i fluid flimed my gen1 tundra, i never did any body panels. After 19 years living in the rust belt there was no rust on the rocker, or body panels. I think their internally protected with a coating to prevent corrosion before assembly.
As far as my tacoma i did the same with cosmoline. I didn't do any panels. Hopefully its the same.

I got six cans of Cosmoline and I'm hoping to do this before the snow flies and they start spreading salt & brine on the Wisconsin roads. How clean does the metal need to be for the Cosmoline to take? Obviously the cleaner the better, spraying it over actual dirt is not going to bond to the metal, but there is a limit to how clean you can really get things. I was looking to pull the wheels off, put it on jack stands and go at it with my pressure washer and maybe a scrub brush and some Simple Green. Is that good enough? Is it necessary? Just looking for opinions on how others have prepped before spraying.

I would say that your plan sounds good.

I treated my truck when it was brand new.

I just took the garden hose to my truck when it was still new. Waited till the next day when all was good and dry. Was in the 90's when i did it. That stuff stuck like gorilla snot glue. It has yet to come off except for some small spots around the real leafs where you get high abrasion from the wet roads.

Yeah, this is a '21, it's seen 1-1/2 winters. Still looks surprisingly decent under there. I put it up on jack stands, took the wheels off and just spent 2 hours pressure-washing and scrubbing. I'm sure I misssed a ton of spots but it's better than nothing. That was a shitty job for sure. Letting everything dry good today and overnight, leaving the truck in the garage on the stands, and tomorrow I'll probably shoot the cosmoline. Got a full tyvek suit, hood, glasses, gloves and an n-95 mask. I'll put some plastic sheeting under the truck on the floor as far as I can spread it and then start spraying. It's only supposed to be 50F here tomorrow, so I should be able to crack the doors when I'm spraying to keep some fresh air moving thru without getting too cold. Fun!

You sound more than ready. I used a cheap 3m suit with the rest of that stuff outside in the driveway. When you get done all that gear is garbage. It was messy but not terribly hard. Just be sure to lay a tarp under the truck and remove all the wheels including the engine skid plate and spare tire. Once on jack stands its much easier.

Well I'm glad that's done! What a nasty job, but I'm glad I did it. Spent about 2 hours crawling around and spraying under the truck. I bought six cans and used five. I feel I got a really good coating on everything I could. Here are some tips to anyone considering doing this:

    - clean the underside as good as you can before spraying. a pressure washer, soap and a scrub brush worked good for me.
    - remove the skid plate(s) and spare tire before starting anything
    - take the wheels off, you won't get in where you need to with the wheels on
    - wear really old clothes, or get an oversuit because anything you are wearing will be destroyed. get a hood on your head too
    - use a good filter mask because even with some air flow the fumes are pretty bad, you can see them floating around when you are spraying
    - get some plastic sheeting or tarps down under the truck, there's a lot of settling and some dripping and you will mess up your garage floor if you don't
    - get good lighting! A GOOD headlamp worked awesome for seeing into the dark spaces, the light is always shining where you are looking. if you don't have good lighting you will miss stuff
    - get under there and start spraying, and keep going even if you think you got it all. I think I worked my way around the truck 4 or 5 times, looking at all the metal from different angles. towards the end I was challenging myself to find spots I missed. look for holes in the metal you can spray into. get everything from all sides if possible.
    - i bought a handle for spray cans, but honestly it was easier without it. and the red spray tube on the can worked best for getting the spray where you want it.
    - keep shaking the cans while you are spraying
    - let everything dry and set up for a few hours before you try to clean up and put everything back together

I hope this stuff lasts because I don't want to do that again for a while!

It'll last real well as long as you waited about an hour till the 1st coat dried before doing the 2nd coat on the frame itself inside, and out. My truck took 6 cans only hitting anything that was steel. Make sure you get inside those rear bumper components and the hitch. Lots of stuff under the front chin spoiler to once removed. Don't forget inside the rockers.
Your right its a messy job. I use to do my tundra with fluid film every fall just to see it all gone by spring. You have to real dedicated, and a slave to your truck like some here to want to do this twice a year let alone once.
