Hello all, is there any advantage or disadvantage to spraying a liquid coating (FF or NH oil) over cosmoline? Would the liquid melt/dissolve the cosmoline defeating the purpose? Or would it provide another temporary (and sacrificial) layer? Thanks in advance!

Cosmoline can be dissolved with any petroleum derived product.

@bcmbcmbcm I’d pick one and stick with it. I wouldn’t mix products on a single surface. If you want to do something like FF on the interior of the frame and then use the cosmoline product on the outer surface that’s fine. That’s what I’m doing with my current truck.

I'd be careful if even doing that. I'm with you for one, or the other.

What is spraying a different product on the interior going to affect?

FF and the like wash off over time. Cosmolene does not wash off. Why spend more time and money adding junk that doesnt stay on??

It's just like oil treads on tw...there are those that love changing their oil as many times as possible, and those that love redoing their chassis's with fluid film every year....to them money, and time means nothing. Far be it from others to spoil their enjoyment.

This looks great! What kind of prep work did you do (masking)?

Just sprayed Simple Green with a pump sprayer on the undercarrige and pressure washing it off to clean (laying on my side, getting soaked). Let it dry overnight, then sprayed the CRC next day. Didn't do any masking, just was careful with spraying.

Hit my frame with some touchups this week. Last warm day of the year. For a full year there were only a couple of orange spots poking through at some corners in buried spots. Overall pretty good shape.

For anyone who used the rattle can RP342, did it come out like too thick and aggressively? I sprayed 2/3 of my truck today. From the rear up to the transfer case. I was trying to spray it evenly but it would run so much. Don't know if the cold weather had anything to do with it. I'm going to do the front end in the spring I think. The coating is drying and looks good but it just went on heavy....don't know if I was doing something wrong

You'll be fine. It's because of the temp. My waxoyl (same thing different name) went on thick when I did my jeep. Just make sure it has enough time to cure before you drive through heavy rain/snow. The 2 products like to be applied when it's warmer than 50-60 degrees. Don't forget some cavity wax they don't just rust from the outside.

Thanks, ya it's a cold 35 today. No rain today or tomorrow so truck will be parked, I just went back outside to check on it and the coating actually looks to have smoothed itself out nicely. Truck has under 500 miles so I wanted to get it coated asap while it's clean and before the salt comes. And yes I took the frame covers off and soaked the inside.

It didn’t do that for me but i did mine in June. It went on smooth and runs a bit, which is good. Makes sense that it gunks up at cold temps. Spray can and spray applicator and all.

Didn't really "gunk up" per say but ya lots of runs and the can was like high pressure. The coating looks to have dried very well tho. Almost like it self-leveled out.
