RPM does not equal mileage. Think about riding a 10 speed—you don’t start off in 10th gear. There is a sweet spot that will depend on speed, grade, and your particular vehicle and load and type of fuel and atmospheric conditions such as altitude, temperature and humidity. I find it to be between 2.5k and 4K for my 07 v6 4Runner rwd automatic. Things I’ve tried to improve fuel economy; remove gas fume trap-.1mpg, use 87 octane fuel- .1mpg (tho performance is poor), use Lucas fuel additive - .1-.2 mpg, keep rpms above 2500, 2-4 mpg. I’m getting an average of 17mpg between me commuting on SoCal frwys and my wife driving around town. Out on hwy at 65 in 4th at ~2,500 rpm I get close to 20mpg

10 years ago everyone was complaining about our trucks barely making the EPA ratings.

Now half the posters are claiming 18+ mpg in the CITY (and most are doing it with big tires and armor.) LOL

I would love to know what tricks this new generation has, because everyone knows engines only get more efficient as they get older and heavier..
