Hey everyone, been looking for a new Tacoma the past couple weeks and wanted to get a v6 5 speed this time. I finally found a 96 I like and test drove it, and it seemed like it was running a higher rpm than I would feel is normal. At 70 it was running at 3k or so. Do yours run about the same?

I'm having the owner send me the gear ratio code in the morning but just curious what others are running on stock gearing. Thanks in advance

if thats the case, why is my dads v6 auto running 2k on 31s,when the gear ratios are supposedly the same. the 5 speed must be geared lower

You have this backwards. Larger tires would mean lower rpms at a given speed.

Two things can possibly explain those higher rpms. And the numbers you listed are definitely much higher than stock.

If the truck has been re-geared to be able to run larger tires is the most likely possibility. Of course this would mean that the door sticker information would no longer be valid.

The other thing that can make the rpms higher than stock, is if it has tires that are smaller in size from what it came with stock. But you said it had 32s on it so this is not the case. The largest tire from the factory was 31s. On the '96 model the 31s would have been 31x10.5r15s and most likely had 4.10 gears but some of those also came with 3.90 gears.

Sounds normal especially if it has larger than stock tires. My 3.4l 5speed 2004 is pushing just under 3k RPMs at 70mph. If you want decent MPG's, the sweet spot for highway driving is between 60-70 mph. I can do well over that no problem, but gas mileage takes a pretty big hit.

    ???

Bigger tires = more distance traveled per revolution = LOWER RPM at a given speed, assuming the speedo has been corrected. If you just install bigger tires, nothing will change with respect to indicated speed vs RPM although you will be traveling faster than you think.
