What is a safe range for RPMs in our trucks?
Morning commute is a mofo and many times I need to gun off a lane and join the next one but the speed difference is a lot sometimes and need to match the speed in order to lace in between the cars. How far can I push the RPMs safely?

The ECU (computer) won't let you kill your truck. These V6s like to rev high and in fact it's good for you to lubricate things nicely with some high revs. Just keep it low until warm. Gunning it w/ a cold engine is the only thing I'd be concerned about

You are going to hit the fuel cut off before ever getting close to revving too high.

The rev limiter will let you know.

    Hit it. It won't break.

    Cool, thanks guys.
"Normal" speed in the morning is about 45-55 MPH (1500 RPM) but there are slow spots where it moves 15-25 MPH and need to jump over the next lane which has to be done is short time and to achieve this I need to push the RPM to 4000. Was wondering if is safe for the engine to do this a few (3-4) times in one hour.

Let your engine warm up before you rev the engine hard.

You are not putting stress on it at 4000k. You should test it out after it's warmed up and get it up to 6000, just so you know how the truck reacts.

Engine is already hot in the morning.....outside temp is 90F. It reaches normal operating temp while still in the hood before I get to the freeway.
Also my habit is every morning is to start the truck and have a coffee and a smoke for 3-4 min. In that time the engine is at or close to norm temp on the gauge.

OP get a long stretch of road with little to no cars, punch that shit and feel the smile grow across your face if you haven't done it yet you'll be glad you did... doesn't matter if you AT or MT right around 3500-4000 all the way to 6000 is awesome..main reason i got the MT... winding the gears out once and while is fun and for these motors keeps it healthy... not everyday for me though

Try towing. You will be there sometimes 3-4 times in a few minutes and for much longer.

The redline is there to protect the car. So you can redline every day. I personally dont like to go above 4k when the motor is cold though

Never get ambient and operating temperatures confused. 90 degrees is "cold" to the engine for example, while 90 degrees is hot to us as ambient.
To the 0W-20 synthetic oil, 90 degrees is about the same as 30 degrees or 180 degrees as far as the oil is concerned. The viscosity index is pretty flat.

Your truck's components, at any given time, can see wildly varying temps. Your catalytic converter versus your air conditioner components or your piston bore versus your intake air temp for example. Ambient is just where everything starts lol.

All engineers put in a factor of safety in their designs. If the redline is 6k this engine can probably happily drive at 6600rpm with the limiter disabled. Although the power likely drops off rapidly after 6k so it wouldn’t be useful.

You could full throttle your Tacoma in nuetral for half an hour with no issue likely. Modern rev limiters and engine cooling systems are a thing of beauty.

Not to mention redline is sometimes set to protect things hanging from the engine, like the alternator, water pump or power steering pump, from spinning beyond what they can tolerate. Point everyone is making is spot on, since the 90s when EFI and rev limiters started getting more common the car's ECU won't let you ruin anything. I routinely hold my old 1GR at 3,500 or 4,000 RPM for 15 minutes when climbing a pass here in Colorado.

My S2000 is at approx 4,200 rpm at 80 mph in 6th gear. These cars routinely go to 200k miles on factory engines. Sure it's not apples to apples, but running at 4,000 rpm for a few overtakes on the highway is no worry at all.

I ran at 4500 rpm for a looooong time pulling my trailer over the Appalachian mountains. Truck didn't mind one bit.
